Assad is an ally of the Iranians and allows Hezbollah to operate in and out of Syria. Syria is on the list of countries guilty of state-sponsored terrorism. Assad's father was allied with the Soviets. Assad Jr. is closely allied with Russia. Syria is the only nation bordering Israel that has not signed a peace agreement with Israel, unlike Jordan and Egypt.
