It's just that "The Donald" is more vociferous with the "anti-immigrant, anti-muslim, etc" views than Cruz or the other republican candidates. Thus it is logical that he gains the most traction. That is what a large number of the republican base wants.
The other candidates talk about a pathway to legalization for illegals when a good amount of their constituency would rather just round up the illegals and throw them out or worse.
Also, Fox news has been propagating "The Donald's" views for some years feeding the so called anger among the republican base. Well, the chickens have come to roost and it ain't pretty...
If Trump wins the general election (gosh I seriously hope not), blacks in the south might need to start migrating back up north...

What reason does Donald Trump have that we need to listen to? He is louder and verbose, but does he know what really made American great? He doesn't.
Ted Cruz is exactly what the grassroots have always wanted - Send a man to Congress, have them fight for what they promised their constituents and DON'T change! So, he has done that, and they want a loud-mouthed, bloviating jackanape.
I hope that Ted Cruz stays exactly how he is. He will always be a winner.
The reality is that the RNC has rigged the game in SC against having a Conservative win. They have an Open Primary so that Democrats can cross over. If they had not put that option in place, Ted would have won SC and Trump would have come in third.
So, here are the numbers - for anyone wanting to get into the deeper analysis:
