Actually, a tally stick is referred to as a rod in the kjv. I have read in a commentary (NOT THE BIBLE) that the rod was used to mark every tenth animal by dipping the rod in ochre and thereby tapping the beast and leaving a mark on it to signify that it was to be tithed. (Maybe like dipping a paint brush in paint and daubing paint on the tenth animal to mark it for the tithe). The clean animals could not be redeemed according to my understanding of the law. Crops could be if you added one fifth to the value of the crops. That is how I understand it anyway. I don’t think dealing with animals has changed all that much in the last four or five thousand years.
