I can't speak for you Aunt Mary. But for those who I have been with as they were dying. There were those who got more spiritual as the time drew closer.

My atheist dad, two things he never done before he did before he died. One was tell me that he loved me. The second is that he wanted to find out where he was going and not go myself. I have been with some of the meanest individuals as they were passing on, and there whole attitude changed miraculously. Yet, I have been with individuals who had lived for God there whole lives totally get mean and bitter, as life slipped away.
