It was frowned upon. But a lot of folks tried to do it in ways that no one would notice. A lot of folks even went to the movies.
Of course, me the biggest charismatic of them all, never went to the movies and my wife still wears skirts and doesn't cut her hair. I did go one week without shaving when our son was born so I guess I am full blown
charismatic.
