Yep, "Let's just be friends" means that the person has absolutely no romantic interest in you whatsoever and you should just start dating other people... if you said "take things slow", that may have meant what you were trying to project, but "Let's just be friends" was probably the only words he heard in the entire conversation, regardless of if it was a 30 second conversation or a 30 minute one.
Also from previous experience, when a woman tells a man something like this, if she changes her mind 5 years later, she has to tell him that the previous comment no longer applies. If a girl told me she did not like me when we were 15, I would not even consider dating her when we were 20 or 25, even if she were flirting.
When a woman changes her mind, she expects the man can read her "obvious" signals that she has changed her mind... but it does not work that way - you have to SAY you changed your mind.
I also believe that the old adage is true for most people... that women marry men expecting them to change and men marry women expecting that they will not change (talking about habits, likes, dislikes, etc.)
