One very real problem I see is one of perception...some folks assume that those who still practice respect and discretion toward leadership (which they disdain) must never have experienced real hurt, or if they did, they ran from it rather than handling it courageously.

That just goes to show your lack of understanding. The hurt is there, but it was handled differently, not badly or inappropriately.

I see no reason to drag another person through mud simply because they deserve it. God doesn't give me what I deserve, so how would I ever possess the right to do that to someone else?

It reminds me of the story in Matthew 18:21-35.
