Thinking of the home missionaries that came through the NYC area ... I think part of their "failures" were .... that there was no support system in place for those dropped in by what Coon calls the "parachute method" .... but also a recognition on their part that the paradigm was not effective in this urban metropolis ....

Phil Goldsberry comes to mind.

He came to NYC to start a church as a home missionary, Long Island to be more precise ... before you know it ... bam!!! .... the district board was meeting because he had "gone Charismatic".

While another ... who I will not name ... tried to burn down the church to collect the insurance ... while blaming his temporary loss of sanity to Lyme disease, if memory serves. Real cool guy, otherwise .... played minor league ball for the Cardinals and taught me how to throw a cut fastball.
