Just Curious...Would You Support This Decision

Just Curious...Would you support this decision in your loved one's life before any diagnosis is made?

Probably. If the risk is really high, then it boils down to cosmetics versus life and obviously life takes precedence. My maternal grandmother died of breast cancer (which spread into her bones), so that may bias my answer.

Any hesitation would be for this reason:

Quote:
Sandra Swain, medical director of Washington Cancer Institute in Washington, DC, fears that women who have lost family members to breast cancer could take Rose’s example too literally.

“We’re seen a rise in prophylactic mastectomies and a lot of it is not for a medical reason; it is because of fear and anxiety,” she said.

Rose does not carry the “breast cancer genes” BRCA1 and BRCA2, but she did inherit a rare genetic mutation which might predispose her to the disease.
Fear isn't a good reason to cut off parts of your body.

I think she is making a reasonable choice based on family history.

"She is removing both breasts as a preventive measure to reduce her chances of developing the disease that killed her mother, grandmother and great aunt."

Look at the stats, the risk of breast cancer rise dramatically when a woman takes chemical birth control.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... Would I support this decision?

I suppose I wouldn't care either way if some nun or priest decided to get rid of his or her useless body parts.

I would support a person making their own decision on the issue. It is an incredibly personal issue and I feel a person has the right to make that choice and be supported in it.

Re: Just Curious...Would You Support This Decision

Monterrey is right about birth control.

Estrogen feeds breast tumors. Birth Control pills use estrogen to prevent ovulation by 'mimicking pregnancy' or tricks the body into thinking it is already pregnant.

I was horrified when I read this article.

I guess I am going to have yet another unpopular opinion here. But...at her age, I just cannot see lopping off two healthy organs to prevent disease. I am just thinking that with the advancement of technology today, she can be closely monitored and at the first sign of cell mutation, have the surgery.

Would men have their gonads removed because of a history of testicular cancer in their family. That is just as horrifying to me to use this as a first remedy.

I realize that this is totally her decision, since it is her body. But, this is an intention I probably would not have announced to the entire world. I would seek my support from friends and family.

I know a family that several members have died of brain tumors. Would this be a prevention remedy? (Of course I am being facetious in this question )

I guess that was my first thought. Just be more careful and get tested more often than you might normally do it otherwise.
