I found a new type of DR. to hate!
Sitting here at the foot dr. I'm in for plantar fasciitis (torn tendon) in the arch of my foot. Yes, this is quite painful. I Think I injured it running. Anyway DR. suggested a cortisone shot, to which I agreed. So in he comes, with a spike full of what looks to be milk. I ask " will this be painful?" I thought I already knew the answer. He said "This will be the worst shot of your entire life." Nervously, my voice squeaks out "really?!" He responds flatly with the affirmative "really." He warns me not to kick. Come on how bad can it be? Naked foot in cold hands, lying flat on my back, in goes this instrument of torture into the arch of my foot. Oh...my... gawwdd ! Unbelievable pain. Over and over, slowly changing angles, pumping the steroid in to my foot. It seemed like forever, when it probably it was 30 seconds or so. The dentist has nothing on this guy. I now realize that I could have avoided this if I would have babied my foot at the first twinge of pain. Instead for several weeks, I ran on it, didn't ice it and stood on it all day at work. So here is the public service announcement part of my post: please, take care of your feet, much pain awaits if you abuse them. You've been warned.

I have thought about the cortisone shot in the knee, wondering if the knee is as bad.

Had one in my shoulder about 10,12 years back, was a bit painful and left me sore for the next day. It was nothing like this. I will say, I have zero pain now. Could hardly walk before the shot.

He was being honest alright. As nice a guy as you would ever meet, very down to earth. Was quite chatty during the infamous shot. I could have done without that. And ... Yes better a pediatrist than a proctologist . Ha hah

Re: I found a new type of DR. to hate!
It's my experience that most doctors will "numb" the area where they intend to inflict pain. I think yours could have and should have used a little local anesthesia, but I suppose it would have cost more $$ and maybe your insurance wouldn't have covered it. I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder once. It was a rather delicate procedure that required the doctor to use ultrasound to guide that super long needle to the right spot. As for the pain, as I recall, it was really a piece of cake. However, I've also suffered from plantar fasciitis so I can feel for you. Maybe mine wasn't as bad because a few days on prednisone did the trick for me. Well, that and getting prescription orthotics from the podiatrist. This getting old thing, it just isn't for sissies. But God still grants us the strength to make it day by day.

He did apply a topical anesthetic and the cortisone had an anesthetic mixed in with it too. The topical, squirt on stuff only help with the initial needle prick. Unfortunately, the injected anesthetic kicked in as he was finishing up. Doc. Explained the pain was from the fluid that was injected, different PH injected into a very sensitive, very inflamed area. I'm feeling much, much better now. Thank God. Insurance had me covered, orthotics and all. Grateful for excellent insurance. I've had the cortisone shot in the shoulder years back. Painful yes, but paled in comparison. I think I let it get inflamed too much for too long hoping it would just get better.
