Since then I’ve been digging around and found a little bit more info….
Romans 11:8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear) unto this day. (Also in OT
I Sam 26:12, God gave man a “deep sleep”)
From what I’ve read, spirit of slumber seems to be worse than the spirit of complacency…. as a complacent person is aware of their surroundings and callings and just willfully choose to ignore/avoid them…. a person with the spirit of slumber cannot see or hear anything and thus are completely oblivious to their spiritual surroundings and/or their spiritual condition…. I see the spirit of slumber affecting people in four major categories….
- A condition of sleep affects one’s ability to hear/receive the truth of the Word (Acts 20:9)
- A condition of sleep affects one’s willingness to seek God in prayer (Matthew 26:40)
- A desire for slumber can hinder one’s willingness to worship God (Psalms 132:4-5)
- A condition of sleep can affect one’s readiness for the coming of the Lord (Matthew 25:1-10)
I suppose the worse thing that comes of it all, is that people think that they’re spiritually ok…. and nothings wrong….
What I haven't been able to determine is:
a) Does God only give this spirit of slumber to people as a form of punishment?
b) Does the enemy (Satan) have access to spirits with the same capabilities?
c) Can a person be shaken out of the grasp of this spirit? via prayer or preaching?
