We did not wear uniforms
"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."
Quote from Ethel Goss (widow of 1st UPC Gen Supt. Howard Goss) book "The Winds of God"

Re: We did not wear uniforms
we had discussed something similiar awhile back. if you look at older oneness pentacostal picture taken back in the late 40-50's you would find that the women were just like everyone else. they cut there hair put jewlry on even i think there was a picture of even joyce hanney with a necklace some where.
But yes all these extra traditions came in with the holiness movement. Pentacostalism always had methodist roots, as also was william seymour.

YUP. I find it very interesting indeed. So when we say LET'S GO BACK TO THE OLD TIME WAY...just how far back to you want to go. Let's go back to Sis. Goss! Or back to when the Methodist were the Holy Rollers.

I read the book many years ago and that part jumped out at me.

Re: We did not wear uniforms
There were two groups, the Holiness people and those that were not. I remember reading about Azusa street and how the group that struggled hardest to receive the baptism were the Holiness people. It's a strange marriage

Re: We did not wear uniforms
See, you just pointed out something I never knew. I did not know that there was actually a difference. Okay. Great information!

The holiness group were methodists and referreed to the second blessing. Before 1900 they were not noted for being holy rollers. Holy rollers came later.

Re: We did not wear uniforms
somewhere once I had a copy of a sermon JW preached on holiness...even the strictest oneness groups do not preach dress standards like he did...I need to try to find that sermon...it was interesting. My grandmother was a Methodist...she used to tell me her mother shouted the hairpins our of her bun....

LOVE IT!!! I just love when women shout out of their hair. It's because usually women are so reserved and would never mess up their hair. But when they get excited and begin to Praise God, that flys out of the door. See, the whole "holiness thing" threw me as a child because the Methodist and Baptist I knew could "out shout" anyone! Never knew that we were suppose to be reserved until the Apostolic church told me we were. lol

That's not what I was commenting about. Not sure why I was quoted just then.
