I read this on Fox News. I think it is sad, but this comes from the parent not being responsible with the children and the gun. Anyone with much knowledge of these things knows that you do not leave young children where guns are readily available because of this very reason. This is a tragedy.

Re: 5 yr old shoots 2 yr old

When my wife's nephew was 6 years old he jumped in his dad's jeep and put it into neutral. Since their driveway was on a slight slope, it rolled down and across the street and into the side of the neighbors house. No one was killed in this case, but it shows that young kids can get into trouble in many many ways and it is incumbent on adults to keep them safe. But even after all the precautions are taken, things can happen.

Re: 5 yr old shoots 2 yr old

Two weeks ago one of my milk customers 2 (nearly 3) year old fell in their swimming pool and drowned witht the whole family out in the backyard getting ready to go to a baseball game. When they didn't see him anymore they went back in the house looking for him as he laid at the bottom of the pool with his ride-on toy tractor for almost 15 minutes... These are great Christian people who love their kids. They have 3 older homeschool kids who were raised with a pool and all swim like fishes. They are devastated. It's been all over the news here and I've heard comments at work and in the grocery about how the parents should have 'known better' and meaner comments than that.

While I don't know this other family with the firearm accident... all my boys (five of them) were raised with guns in the house and until I know that these parents did something absolutely negligent I am not going to say it is their fault...and even if it were, they have paid the highest penalty for their mistake and right this moment, as Christians, we need to be charitable in our comments. The internet sometimes travels further than we think.

If the gun wasn't in the home this would not have happened. What kind of person gives a 4 year old a gun??

Re: 5 yr old shoots 2 yr old

The child was five. However, the problem is that the gun was not properly secured. Especially as the mother was not going to be in the presence of the children the whole time. Further, according to what I read, the gun was apparently left standing in a corner much of the time. This meant that it was easily accessible to the child. This is a sad day, and I hope to see the CPS stay out of this tragedy.

It was a gun made for a youth. Many people live around guns and are comfortable with guns from a young age. Just because you do not feel that doesn't make those who do feel that way in the wrong.

That does not really matter. The fact remains that these parents should have been more responsible. I was raised around guns my whole life. If I had ever been in desperate need of them, I could have gotten to them, but I never had any such need, and the keys were well hidden from us boys while we were growing up. I know that we went shooting often, and when I was 10, I had a pellet gun. By the time I was 13-14, I had been given a shotgun. However, we were trained in how to use these guns, and learned to give them the respect that they are due.

Me. We are farmers and hunters, our chidren and grandchildren can plant a garden, milk a goat and shoot a squirrel by the time they are 5.

I have a loaded shotgun (every gun in my house is loaded) behind the front door. I have a loaded AR in the bedroom.

My husband carried a pistol as part of his job for 20 years. It was always in the house... loaded.

This gun was supposed to be unloaded... probably their only mistake... Many more people are accidentally shot with 'unloaded' guns than with loaded ones.
