I know that the following statements might be attacked and that is OK
and that some may even attack me of being hypocritical since I am the one who wrote the following article about
the Round God
Someone may say then how can I defend sports after what I wrote.
Well simple because the Bible speaks of sports yet never condemns them.
Paul speaks in
1 Corinthians 9:26
Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.
The Corinthians were familiar with the Isthmian games where participants run and boxed for prizes.
Paul used those sports as example of discipline and self-control.
Philippians 3:14
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
This is an allusion to the popular Greek running games.
2 Timothy 2:5
An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
We can see that athletes had to follow rules or else they were disqualified.
2 Timothy 4:7
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
We can see here that Paul was well familiar with Sports yet he never once condemned as being of the devil, but instead used them as examples.
Those preachers who thunder against sports, perhaps should learn a thing or two from Paul who lived in the Greek world, a region where sports were popular. Where are the thundering denunciations by Paul against Sports?
