In my oppinion a lot of the things that happened to me in my life when I look back was Gods way of making me who I am today and without those memories or experiances the person that is me would not be.You know the fiery trials and things is God making us and the foot steps that we walk were ordained by God.He always takes the bad things and make something good if we let him in our lives. But on the other hand my husband still has post trematic stress disorder from the Vietnam war and he says that God cant forgive him of that time in his life and I try to tell him that the blood is stronger than any sin that man can do and that he is insulting the blood of Jesus I only say this to him because my words must be strong to get it down in his heart as he will not come to Jesus because of this.We are human and need to leave the store house of Gods knowledge alone.Jesus in the word said that I will wipe your tears away and you will remember your pain no more.Ithink we need to let him do that because He wants to be the one to wipe them away.

Some little piddly stupid things. I was just thinking about some stupid little thing I did as a teenager that still makes me blush. I'd prefer to never think of it again. It wasn't even horrible, just embarrassing.

But most things? Even though they hurt, were awful, aren't pleasant memories..... no. They've made me who I am.

Re: If you could erase bad memories would you?

I have no regrets other than I wish I had submitted my will to God and learned of him and his ways before the age that I did. Raised and brought up in church, but in many ways so far from him.

I have had a lot of life circumstances that have hurt and bad memories… I don’t regret what has come my way as it has made me who I am today. There could have been an easier way, but I chose wrong paths and turns along this way of life. God has brought about good in everything by my learning and making the best of what was left. I was corrected because he loved me. I wish I had not been such a stubborn person, obedient and willing to listen and search for the will of God from the beginning or onset of my adult life, but so glad that finally I gave my will over to the Lord.

There are different types of trials or affliction…. or what we seem to call trials. There are the situations of life that happen because we have not applied the word of God to our lives and conformed to his will. It is the things in life that we do wrong where the laws set into place by God that teach when broken. If we sow disobedience, we will reap the consequences of it… if we abuse our bodies with any food or substance, we reap the ill health. If we don’t discipline ourselves and become good stewards with money, we will continually be plagued with problems financially. Life just has a way of teaching and correcting wrong turns, and it hurts but we learn from every circumstance. We can only learn from our mistakes.

Then there are trials in the life of a child of God that are brought about by our doing the right thing in a society that is total opposite of God. It is the suffering that takes place in our lives when we are doing right and we refuse to give into the ways of the world. When we choose to honor God and his word over ideology of this world and its thinking, we will suffer, but it is in those circumstances that we bring glory to God. There are times when we are just tested of God… and we just have to stay strong and know in whom we have our trust.

In anything that happens in this life I do not regret… I try not to look to the past, pressing on towards the future and the promises given… however memories do linger… but I have no regrets.

Re: If you could erase bad memories would you?

This therapy has been around for a while:

http://www.helpguide.org/mental/emdr_therapy.htm

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
Guide to Making an Informed Choice

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy developed by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro. She made the chance observation that eye movements can reduce the intensity of the disturbing thoughts when she noticed her own stress reactions diminished when her eyes swept back and forth as she walked through a park one day. EMDR involves recalling a stressful past event and “reprogramming” the memory in the light of a positive, self-chosen belief, while using rapid eye movements to facilitate the process.

Theories as to why EMDR works are still evolving, but many people have found EMDR to be extremely beneficial. Read on to learn about this complex and often misunderstood therapy.

Re: If you could erase bad memories would you?

On one hand, I HAVE learned a lot from most of my bad memories...... except for the bitterness it left behind. For that reason, I often wish I could forget some things.

One huge example is my extreme distaste for the traditional church service. My associations are nearly all bad when it comes to standing through a song service, listening to preaching, and waiting for long alter calls to end. It is all "Pavlovian" because of the horrible first few years. 25+ years later, I still haven't shaken it off.

Re: If you could erase bad memories would you?

If I forgot the bad memories, I may doom myself to the experiences that allowed or even caused the bad memories in the first place.

Sure there are things in life that have happened to me or involved me, that I had absolutely no influence in the cause, outcome, effect-- but most of my bad memories stem from incidents that I could have prevented if I had been wiser.

No. I do not want to erase bad memories-- just the bad decisions.
