It was part of proper modicum of yesteryear. Does not fly well with today's generation - that's for sure.

Re: The UPC Rev.'s Thou Shalts and Thou Shalt Not
I have lived in and been around UPC leadership in 4 states.
Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Oklahoma.
I have not known one pastor who had a "tv" in their house.
I know some pastors whose children play organized athletics, (which is also in the manual).
Now, I never really made it a point to ask about tv, but it usually tends to come out after a while.
Due to what "I do" and personal contacts, I also have some contact with the national leadership of the UPC and WPF.
I do not know of any there that have a "tv" either.

How do you know anyone didn't have a tv in their home? Did you visit their home?

Re: The UPC Rev.'s Thou Shalts and Thou Shalt Not
jf - I do not have a sworn affidavit from anyone.
Some I have visited their home, some I have not.
I cannot say this is true for all ministers in these districts.
This is not formal research.
I will say of the 100+ ministers that I know in these districts, I do not know of any with a tv in their home.

Re: The UPC Rev.'s Thou Shalts and Thou Shalt Not
Yeah, I remember being taught to follow all of these and then when we got into the pastorate, I think we were the only ones following them!!! Nothing like pure disillusionment!!

Then maybe some of them just didn't talk about if they did or didn't because they knew it would be a point of contention?

Re: The UPC Rev.'s Thou Shalts and Thou Shalt Not
I think the "Letter of Recommendation" or "Transfer" was to try to limit church hopping of "leadership" members. Those such as Musicians, Teachers, Worship Leaders.
All in all most of these by-laws were implemented due to past situations that had occurred and needed to be resolved. I think some of them you could throw under "Pauline Instructions". So are antiquated.
My concern is for the lack of unwillingness to submit to anyone by some pastors (of any organization). Every man (even a minister) needs to be accountable to someone else.
