I was pregnant with my first child, a nurse was filling out my paperwork. She looked over at my hand, and said - "You live with your parents?" A very natural assumption, since I was young and not wearing the symbol our culture customarily wears to show that we're married. What a great witness.

Have you ever heard of "rightly dividing?"

Some of the stupidity that has been added to scripture is horrendous. One of the narrow minded preachers from my past preached you couldn't wear red and the women had to wear seam hose! And that was just the start of many, many non-Biblical doctrines produced by human minds.

How in the world do you act single?

I know several women in their early 30s who have never been married. They don't conduct themselves a BIT differently in public than married women do. What do you suggest they do? Make eyes at every guy they meet?? Swing their hips as they walk by? Pass their phone numbers to guys?

Seriously, how do you act single? Aren't all women supposed to act godly and modest - married or single?

I guess you weren't "acting married" good enough.

On one job my wife had years ago, someone asked her, "How long have you been divorced?"
My wife replied, "I'm not divorced. Why would you think I'm divorced."
The person replied, "Well, you don't wear a wedding ring."

Sorry you had a bad expierence with preachers that did not explain stuff. I have always taught, and been taught, that there is some things we take a stand against cause "God said", some stuff we have principle in the bible to teach for or against it and some things are just house rules or keeping ourselves seperated from the world.

You should have loudly stated that "I DON'T NEED THEM THAR WORLDLY WEDDING BANDS!!!" while making sure you get a few specks of spittle on the nurse's glasses.
