We have Burmese people who attend our church, and the men put on these wrap-type skirts whenever they're cooking (probably other times, too, but that's just what I've observed.) They don't seem less "manly" because of this custom, and most certainly not "feminine." They don't see it as a woman's garment, obviously, although women wear them, too. It's more of a unisex/practical piece of clothing.

Which makes your Burmese male congregants more in line with the first century church who wore robes, than we today who wear these new-fangled pant thingies.

If this were a simple matter of modesty and had nothing to do with gender distinction, it would make more sense to me for men to wear long skirts. Obviously, there are several cultures where this is already the case. I think that the women's outfits such as those worn in India with pants (or even jeans) and a tunic are the most modest of all. There's definitely nothing remotely masculine about these looks.

I think ya'll just like being sensational here sometimes. Or it's the only place where we can dump anything negative that is bothering us. LOL! I've been around men, all of my life, that wear Wranglers every day of their life, my husband included, and I'm not seeing their "stuff". I find it extremely hard to believe a large group of men are sprawling around on the platform, in dress pants, with their "junk" in our faces.

Thanks for taking the time, but I'm not interested in this type of conversation. I was mainly interested, because of the title of the thread, in the "origin" of pants in society.

I'm not being sensational. And it's not even negative enough to "bother" me to where I would need to dump anything. I just think it's bad taste. It's usually dress pants that are too small (particularly in the inseam) and probably underwear that don't fit properly. It's gross and I don't want to see it and it's immodest, but I don't think it's intentional on the part of men, generally speaking.

Not likely to happen in Wranglers, really...at least, not so, um, defined. Jeans are made from thicker fabric, so while it can still be a bit embarrassing if someone is wearing SUPER tight jeans, it's not quite as bad. Although there was this ONE guy who attended the same church we did in Louisiana...really big guy. Wore skin tight jeans that were probably three sizes too small. Tucked in his shirt. Pulled them up WAY too high. It was a hot mess. And he sat on the front row.

Well, I would still have to say it has to be on a small scale. If it was that big of a deal, I would have noticed it somewhere down the road and I can't recall a time that I have.

A pair of tight white jeans can be pretty revealing. Seen that a couple of times. Eeek! We were visiting a small church a few months ago and a young boy was on the platform singing. He had on Wranglers and looked just like Woody on Toy Story. LOL! Those creases some do in their jeans just kills me! It makes me want to say, "Howdy!"

That's ignorant. It's not a woman's garment in their native culture. It might be in Western culture, which is where you get your culture from, but not to them.

Schools have uniforms. Those uniforms are for SCHOOL. The teacher or principal don't dictate how you dress when not in school nor do they make it a condition of being saved

BTW I've never heard a preacher called names or told to get with the times for preaching or enforcing standards in his church. If someone in that church does not like it they should find another church

An Apostolic man? How can one tell from a distance or even up close? Shouldn't an Apostolic man also have a dress code that sets him apart? Don't say suit and tie, then they look like a banker, businessman, etc. Long shirt? Big deal, many men wear them. A first century tunic? OK, now we are getting somewhere.
I walked up to a lady and her daughter at a store once, she had uncut hair, no makeup and no jewelry on. Both her and her daughter were like that and they wore skirts. I asked "are you Apostolic?"...she glared at me and said dryly "no".

I mentioned this to someone else and they told me they made the same mistake.

BTW didn't Lee Stoneking tell us witches have uncut hair too?

Yep, I agree. I was making too general an assumption with my post. We can't plug everything or everyone we see into neat little sockets. Too big and diverse of a world out there to be very successful at that. Some people just want to dress conservatively no matter their religion or lack thereof.
