This video is an example of things taken to the far extreme. There is a right way of spanking a child, and a wrong way. This dad did it the wrong way.

Indeed.

This is why spanking should be done as a corrective action and not as an outlet for anger.

It was our practice (back when our kids were of spanking age) to first sit down and discuss why this spanking is being given. We generally open the word and discuss what was wrong about their actions and talk about it for a while. As I remember from my childhood days I disliked "the talk" worse then the spanking. But it is the most important part. It informs them of why we're doing this and it lets them know that we are doing this in love as a corrective action and that we aren't just lashing out in anger.

I also have a rule that we never spank our children for something that we've never discussed before. No matter it seems like it ought to be "horse sense" to know not to do this or that... if I haven't instructed in this... I don't spank for this.

There have been a few times when discussing why we don't do this or that that a true spirit of repentance filled the room and the spanking was averted. I'm not "hankerin'" to spank my children. I'm wanting to see correction in their lives and I'll take that however it comes.

Also... consistency is the key as well. If they do something 20 times with no issue at all but THIS TIME it makes you mad so they get a spanking... that's inconsistent and serves no purpose for instruction and teaching. When children are corrected they should be corrected for wrong actions... not because they "ticked me off".

If a parent spanks just because they are angry they are in need of some instruction themselves.

Did you see this girl on Dr. Phil today? It's pretty clear that Hillary (the girl) is not the only one in this home who has been the subject of abuse.

I'm amazed at some of the responses on this thread. Sickened and saddened, too. If an adult were to attack another adult in that manner, it would be a crime, but if an adult attacks a child in that manner, it's "discipline" and the family's business.

There is NO way that is Christlike behavior, and anyone who treats his children like that in the name of God is going to REALLY distort their view of God.

I personally know a few people who utilized "harsh discipline" on their kids, and I can tell you that a huge percentage of those children left the faith when they reached adulthood. That is not what we want for our children; our first responsibility is to lead them to a relationship with God. There is NO way you can do that if you abuse them. Having control of someone is not the same as having influence with them, and in order for your children to listen to you long-term, you must have influence; not simple control.

Be Christlike. In everything. Including how you parent your children.

I personally knew a UPC pastor who wailed on his son with a belt all the time. The last I knew the son "put God on a shelf".

The Dad being a judge, should have used other methods to punish his daughter. After all he claims she did something illegal.

it was pretty clear on Dr Phil today that the problem he had with what she was doing that was illegal was how it would look for HIM if she got caught.

Whether he is a judge or not, he absolutely should have used other methods to punish his daughter. She was way over the edge! And it doesn't sound like this was the first time it happened. Nor does it sound like this daughter is the only one he beat on. It sounded like there was also spousal abuse. And there is another child in this home - a 10 year old girl.

This man clearly needs help! But until that happens, he should not be allowed unsupervised visits with the 10 year old. The wife has left him, so that is no longer an issue.

I was just thinking the same thing this morning, MissBratt. There are some people here who I have lost every shred of respect I had for in the past. Anyone who could condone this kind of behavior - and even DEFEND it - is as bad as the person who did the behavior. Makes me wonder what goes on in THEIR homes! That's scary.

Deuteronomy 21:18-21, says;

If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. Do you consider this Old Testament practice, "Child Abuse", and do you have respect for people who did such things to their own children, like stoning them to death for being rebellious?

I find much inconsistency on this whole Thread; People are outraged for current acts of abuse, yet we ignore that God's Chosen people practiced forms of discipline in the past, that today would make our blood boil.

I believe these are important issues to address, as we take our strong stands in judgment of others, while holding a Book that may support an act of violence as "God's Will". This shows the valid conflict of the Old and New Testament, and, the possibility that certain forms of our own Religion may carry a very dark past and nature of cruelty towards innocent people and children.

BTW, I don't agree with this father's treatment of his daughter. I grew up in a very violent home, and I was abused by my drunken parents who went to Church every Sunday.
