Re: Alaska
Brother Kodak,
I have lived in Alaska. It is majestic and wonderful but also a very difficult place. My experience was that people who lived there for under three years found the bad outweighed the good and did not stay. Those that for one reason or another stayed longer than that seemed to develop a love - hate relationship with Alaska. They loved it dearly but it was such a tough place to live in the winter many would move to the lower 48 then move back. Several times! They would not be happy away from Alaska and were not happy when in Alaska.
You can expect about a month of below 0 degree weather each year in Palmer with it getting around -20 degrees at the coldest point. Summer days wiill have a high in the mid 60's with it dipping down into the 40's at night.
I miss Alaska but have been in the Southern half of the USA for way too long now and I could not handle the cold temps in the winter. I would think it would be particularly hard for a person as they get older.
If you could I would recommend a middle of winter visit to see what you think before moving. Is the house you are approved for a homestead?
Oh. last but not least the cost of living is outrageous in Alaska. The overall cost of living is about 25% more than the USA average with food being 37% higher.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."
