Example of a church becoming a cult

Here is a link to an interesting article written by a woman who as a young girl attended a church that later became a cult. The pastor is now wanted on a national warrant for sexual child abuse.

I found the narrative of the story fascinating as it sounds like this church started out as a run of the mill Charismatic house church group and evolved into a cult.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Re: Example of a church becoming a cult

That sounds like they were part of The Way International. I visited a Church that was heavily influenced by them in 1975. Sadly on my second visit there I invited my parents. They loved it! I was very disappointed after that visit and did not go back.

However my folks became members there. They were not actual members of the Way but they purchased teaching Materials from them and held basically the same doctrines.

The leader of The Way Victor Weirwille himself fell into adultery. They were big into OSAS.

Re: Example of a church becoming a cult

Here is a short video that shows the "before" stage of a group that started out with a bang. Origins about 1968. In the beginning won thousands to Christ and practiced strict morality and discipleship.

When we started our street ministry in the 70's we had never done such a thing. I was only a year old in the Lord. Our first night on the street we met a young couple as we witnessed in the Bus Stop at Dayton Ohio.

They were part of "The Children Of God". We struck up a friendship with them as they had just moved to the Dayton area. For a while afterwards we hung out together and we learned about street witnessing from them.

They tried to get our group to merge with them. At first we really thought about it. Take 5 minutes and watch an early video of them starting a new commune in England.

So we were attracted to them as they were very different than other groups. Very bold, very much able to reach the sub culture "hippies" which we were ourselves wanting to do. The only ones of the day really preaching a message of judgment to the nations and the coming of Jesus!

To make a long story short in time we discovered their movement was changing. The leader began an affair. He went berserk and began teaching the group that fornication was ok. At that time many of the "children" left the group disappointed and distraught having not known any other Christian way.

However a majority stayed with them. They went from forbidding pre marital sex to encouraging it. The fall was horrible as it changed into a sex cult. In time even their children were used as sex objects.

I think their leader David Berg "Moses David" will have a harsher punishment than even Hitler. He had an opportunity to shape many thousands of young lives for Christ and threw it away for the pleasures of sin for a season. Most grievous the idea that even to this day the group claims to be Christians while preaching "free love" perverting the gospel of Jesus Christ.

PS-Don't know where all the underlines came from.

MTD, very sad. I agree that these men who cause multiple persons to stumble will surely have special consequencces when judgement day comes.
