On the verge of a new constitution?

According to Article V of the Constitution, Congress must call a convention when 2/3rds of the states apply. That magic number is 34 states. Since three states have formally withdrawn (rescinded) their calls, that would seemingly leave us 5 states away from having a Con-Con. However, we have been informed that the advocates of the convention are waiting to capture not five, but only two more. It is said that if they get two more states to pass resolutions for a Con-Con, they plan to challenge the rescissions of the three states and throw them into the courts while going ahead with a convention.

I wonder how many people have any idea what all this means? The last con-con we had was in the 1780s...

We're only two states away from one. The movement is actually gaining steam compared to where it was twenty years ago.

To correct the title, it's not a "new" constitution, it's for ratifying constitutional amendments outside of congress' purview. When congress won't do what needs to be done, the states can band together to do it themselves. That's all this is.

Also, just calling for the constitutional convention doesn't automatically mean all the amendments will be adopted. They still have to be discussed, debated and approved.

Once a con-con is convened anything goes. That's EXACTLY what happened at the last one. They were supposed to make some amendments to the Articles of Confederation and came up with a whole new document.

If you think the politicians of today are restrained by virtue and common-sense I have some bridges for sale at a great price.

Those were my thoughts when I first read this thread.

There are those who have been saying that the Constitution is a "living" document: which
means subject to change and modifications. Like torture, killing U.S. civilians, imprisonment
for ANY reason, etc.
Some will say, "We already have that!" No, we don't. Because the present Constitution is still active,
many things that present and previous administration have done are ILLEGAL! What a new
Constitution would do is make that which is currently illegal, LEGAL!

Exactly. I suspect a new constitution would be designed to give legal cover to abuses already in play by the time it was produced, stuff happening now and worse things that the wicked have on their planning boards.
