I would never speak "against" an individual that smoked or was over weight as that would be presumptuous and rude. I speak in generalities as I face them in the business world. Still, I have no sympathy for anyone that indulges in such as they may have "picked it up", but they made it a habit continuing the practice. It's a all a matter of choice, then it becomes a struggle in which many dear people loose the battle over.
My mother was one that worshiped the cigarette all her life until it finally put her in the grave at an early age. She was only 69. To the very end she declared, I smoked because I chose to and this is what I deserve. All of her children, excluding me, used tobacco at that time. To the best of my knowledge all four of my younger siblings quit using tobacco shortly after her funeral. They made a "choice", not to willingly kill themselves.
Over eating has the same consequence over time; just as under eating can also harm our bodies.
We need to have the mindset that our bodies are a temple, a gift, given to us by our G_d and should be treated as such. We should never willingly do anything that would cause us harm.

Do you mean processed white sugar or any sugar? We all need sugar in our diet to survive but I personally try to stay away from processed white sugar as much as possible. I don't even have it in my house. I know is it in some of the few processed foods that I eat but I don't get in a fuss over it. At my current age/weight and level of exercise, I am not concerned over a little processed sugar.

Are fat people discriminated against? Do they miss out on jobs and ministry opportunities because of their weight? If you had to choose between exact replicas of the same church - yet one church had a fat pastor and the other a stud muffin, would you choose the stud muffin solely based upon the other guy's obesity problem?

Yes they are, I work for an upper class golf resort, and they do not hire overweight people. In fact they go as far to tell the photography who take pictures for special events to cut out overweight people who may attend . Nor do they like to rent out units to people who are overweight, due to the stress they put on furnishings.

As one who, in the last 4 years, has gone from morbidly obese to 'fat' with a small 'f' (>450 to 230lbs) some people treat me much better now that I'm almost a 'normal' size.
I also can tell a major difference in how I'm looked at and treated.
It was just last year that if it was crowded and I needed to get through, people stopped everything and parted like the Red Sea to allow me room.
Now, I have to squeeze through because nobody notices me!
I also once was told by a former employer that my size scared people. I did private duty work and apparently there were complaints about my size and how I intimidated people....it didn't help that not only was I very overweight, but almost 6' tall as well.
I also see a difference in how people talk to me. They look at my face and not at my body. There aren't whispers and stares when I am in a room of strangers.
Funny though....I didn't really notice how I was treated then until just recently when noticing the difference now.

To "discriminate?", against fat people? I'm really not sure that using that word is appropriate in this case. Making a decision not to hire someone because they are overweight, requires one to set a dividing line at best. Studies have shown that the overweight (by this I mean to say, obese and morbidly obese) is a serious health issue that can cost a company a considerable amount of money in health care. Not hiring a smoker, is a wise decision due to the health risk the individual has willingly placed themselves into by using tobacco. People are obese because they have no control over their food intake and do not exercise. Hence, they will have serious health problems as a result. Make no mistake, over eating and nicotine addiction are behaviors that are curable by simply stopping the destructive behavior!
To discriminate then, in my humble opinion, is to be very discerning before hiring someone who is unable to control their personal health and habits which could easily cost the company more than what the employee could ever give by their labor.
I realize my comments will likely set off a fire storm of debate but, as a personnel manager, there has to be a line drawn somewhere. I am required NOT to discriminate against anyone that falls within the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, but the obese and tobacco users are not a protected minority at this time.
