is SS before service, or at the same time?

I don’t particularly like it. My wife and I have discussed possible changes with our pastor. I’m hopeful we — congregation as a whole — can come to an agreement, but things move quite slowly around here. Making the change certainly isn’t worth much fussing or fighting.

what is the problem with sunday school being the same time as adult church?

Not really a problem, just a couple of preferences. First, we would like our children to attend the week's main service. Second, we would like to be taught in addition to the preaching. More importantly though, the new faces that continue to fill the building have requested additional teaching. There are various classes/meetings throughout the week, but not all are able to attend. Sunday School prior to the main service would help supply that need.

Growing up, we had Sunday School at the same time as the morning service.

I have been part of churches which separate and have Sunday School before the morning service, with about 15-20 minutes in between them. I'm not fond of that format.
