I got in a bit of a polarized discussion over at another forum board when I dwelled on the idea that a core appeal in football is the delivery of violence into the weaker opponent.
Does anyone think football (American) would hold the position it does in our psyche without the administration of being a voyeristic seat at a good "fight"?
Football is about the survival and conquering of a weaker enemy or opponent. As spectators, we get our appetite filled for violence, without a shot being fired! I enjoy watching the more talented and stronger group of men defeat their opponent. Many times the more talented and stronger team is playing my team!
In the end, they all shake hands and prepare for another day of battle!
I see myself vicariously through my favorite players!

The first time I heard that view presented was by rrford on NFCF.
I think you are correct tbpew. Don't preach too hard though, cause I really, really love football!
I won't. Because when my FIL explained to me the real nuance of boxing, I was strangely drawn to the very memorable Leonard v. Duran (as well as Hagler and Hearns).
I asked my self on a few occassions; "why am I watching something that the winner must deliver a blow to the head that will snap the neck in such a fashion as to interrupt the electrical signal from the brain to the legs"?
I did not have any good answers as to why I did and since then I have since moved away from giving any time to watching.

Even in the church.... Many years ago is was uncanny how the pastor would give, or not give, "permission" for people to move away based on their tithe giving. (Meaning, if you gave a lot, you were less likely to be given "permission")

Okay.
btw, did you hear any of the news reporting surrounding the whole pension topic for NFL vets, the chronic orthopedic distress and outright disabililites. The conventional wisdom for the reason why so many NFL vets took their pension earlier at 45 (thus reducing the monthly payment) was they had acctuary information that said a big chunk of the folks would never see 55.
No shots fired but plenty of causalties.

I don't know.. I think as kids we played King of the Hill and the biggest.. strongest and toughest kid always stayed at the top pushing the "weaker" opponents if you will down..
I loved king of the hill because I was smaller. go figure, I ended up on top as often as not. the big guys didnt want to do what it would take to fight me off. LOL. i was just a mean kid i guess. but i did pick my fights with the bigger guys.
