Double The Shipping Charge To Canada?

Pentecostal Publishing House charges 15% to the US 28% to Canada.
Our Currency is almost at par.

For my job as Manager of Warehouse for a major Printing Company, I have had to negotiate freight rates both for Canadian, US, and International Carriers, so I do realize that there are deals to be had if one knows what they are doing.

I am left with one conclusion:

Either they don't know how to negotiate proper rates (affordable) or they are making money on the freight rates.

I know that it is a process in the business world that there is a mark up on transportation, but if one doesn't like it, they can go to another company.
In a Church Publishing business there is a restriction in getting certain materials.

Wouldn't it make sense to just cover your shipping costs so that it can be affordable?

I know there is a lot of things I would order but seeing that 28 % shipping charge, I have second thoughts.

BTW if I was rich I would love to buy a printing company and print a lot of that stuff up in the Great White North!

Can anyone clear this up?

I think you should offer to negotiate for them. It's probably not high on their priority list.

That probably is the answer right there.

Thanks.

They have budget shortfalls and yet, they insist on not outsourcing a single thing. And the prices are lower many places elsewhere...

Seems they are penny wise and pound foolish.

Does part of the doubling of rates include currency translation, or do they have Canadian prices also?

Ron,

As I understand it, the problem is with the Canadian Govt.

When I shipped some Community Coffee to Truly Blessed and Felicity I asked for UPS next day and was not told that this was not possible for less than an exorbitant fee due to the Canadian Postal service surcharges. Instead of sending it as I requested... they took the charge I had paid for normal US next day service and sent it via Canadian postal SUPER SNAIL MAIL and the package took 15 or more days to arrive.

I cannot say this is absolutely true but I can assure it is absolutely what Community Coffee Company told me!

Well, for one thing. You are an individual and it is always more expensive for an individual to ship.

A company, or non profit society such as the publishing house should be able to get a smokin' deal on shipping.

We have tremendous rates as a company with Fed Ex, which they recently upgraded to even better rates.

I do not purchase anything anymore throught PPH. The 28% is an incredible gouge especially when purchasing smaller but more expensive items. Everything that you would want to purchase except PPH published materials can be be purchased demonstrably cheaper through other sources.

PJ,

When shipping to Canada always ship USPS. It is the cheapest, easiest and fastest shipping for small package shipments across the border. This I learned the hard way through a couple of ebay fiascos
