Right on!

Our teenagers have been grounded more times over the internet than anything else - and that is with parental controls on!

Seriously folks, the internet and television debate is getting quite old. We need to face the facts that either one can be a detriment to us if we do not use self-control and accountability. On the other hand, both can be used as an asset to our lives. However, with what triumphant 1 has mentioned above - television vs internet - who can honestly argue with that? There is MORE danger with the internet if not used properly - speaking from experience...

In the UPCI manual under the "Position Papers" section, there is a paragraph on the official position of the UPC in regards to internet use (this came out in 1998).

Rather than attempt to ban the internet, the UPC simply cautions everyone on its usage. The article recommends that the members of the UPC control, regulate, and be accountable when using the internet. But it doesn't BAN it.

Question: What would be wrong with changing the TV stand to this same type of sensible wording? Rather than having a total ban on TV why not copy the same wording on internet use and apply it to TV??

ANY thing that we MISUSE in this world is wrong. There is no way one could ban every thing that has the possibility of being misused.

Now with that said I truly believe God speaks to the heart of pastors and gives them direction concerning there own congregation. If any of the above was not being used appropriately than of course that local pastor would need to address that, with the members who could not control the internet or TV.

Anyway just my common sense opinion.

God Bless.
I have a one word answer for you on the bolded part-PRIDE. Too many people would have to admit they have been wrong on tv for something like what you are suggesting could happen. This is why some are poised to walk if the advertising resolution passes this year. It's all about losing face, Bro.

The parental controls we use are very good. My oldest daughter has gotten bored with being on the net because she can't get into certain sites she'd like to visit. The program is that strict.

When kids are involved the BEST solution to controlling the internet is not parental control software, but simply having the computer in an area, like the living room, where it is hard to do things anonymously.

That would work in situations where there is enough room for the computer in the living room. In our house, my computer is in the dining room and so it my daughter's. My son's computer is up in his room. The software sends me a weekly report of every site they visit and try to visit. I couldn't ask for a better system to keep track of what they are doing. Neither one of them are authorized to download anything to their computers, they can not use instant messenger programs, anyone they try to add to their email account has to be approved by me, and they have to send me a permission request for anything that falls out of the normal boundries set by the system. Plus, I have the option of customizing their access levels. It is, by far, the best system I have seen for controlling internet access.

I agree with you Rico - we did have parental controls with the software that was very strict. However, we changed some settings so they could go to sites for homework and then of course when that was over we forgot to set it back and WOW did they take advantage!

However, my point that I was making above is that I have similar feelings regarding the whole television issue as you do.
