I grew up in an extremely UC church. The pastor went Independent because he felt that UPC was too liberal. (This was in the entire decade of the 70's and most of the 80's) Eventually became part of the AMF for a few years.

Then, suddenly, in the late 80's, after I had moved to the West Coast, he took the church in the opposite direction. It was one of the first churches in the state to go 'carismatic'.

I have observed numerous UC churches on the West Coast do the same thing. Preaching so strict that it was a sin to read anything but the newspaper. Shouting and dancing like I've never seen.

The old saints used to say, "The louder you shout, the harder you fall."

Commitment, Balance, and Consistency is what I say...

My perception:

It is often said that those who left the UPC in the past did so out of "compromise." And it is usually observed that their "standards" and "the message" slipped after they had left. So now, if I understand 3EEE, now that the "whole UPC" is "leaving" with the passage of Res. 4 - "standards" and "the message" will suffer.

I think this approach is too simplistic. Those who left in the past did so because they simply disagreed with the UPC or (in the case of 1977 and TV) they left because the UPC had change a stand on an issue. It only stands to reason that if they left because they didn't agree with the org, then they would not continue to "look like" the org in other areas as well.

The UPC and the OP movement has gone through some rather dramatic changes over the last 100 years. Just go through some photographs that are older than 50 years and you'll really notice the difference. The UPC GS's wife used to wear pearls back in the 1950's. Ladies used to wear slacks if they were doing something "outdoors." Our founders had beards! Now, those are considered "sins." What changed?

What changed around 50 years ago? And what's wrong with going back to the way things were 100 years ago?

(By the way: what is the plural of "Maple Leaf?" "Maple Leaves" or "Maple Leafs?" That is the pressing question of the day!)

3. Allowing slacks on women is at least a few generations away. The UPCI will be one of the last organizations to cave in on this issue!

Independant churches (even those that are now UC) will be the first cave in!
But it's only one generation BACK!

3E,

It is possible that the passing of Res 4 is indeed the "crack of the door" that the cons and ultra cons believe it to be.

I think that by leaving the UPC the cons and ultra cons will certainly be contributing to the possibility that the UPC could change quicker and faster than it would have.

I believe there is a good chance that over the next 15 to 20 years the UPC may move toward having the PAJC salvation view of Acts 2:38 as the common denominator but begin to allow "holiness" issues to be defined by the local pastor

If that happens I think you could see a move away from the undefensibile extra biblical stances against makeup, jewelry, pants, etc for women not to mention the uncut hair doctrine.

I also believe the passing of res 4 could see a shift in approach to so called "holiness". I believe the merging technologies has convinced many preachers that you can no longer base Christian lifestyle around a laundry list of do's and don'ts. That OP's need to start teaching a Christian lifestyle based around a person personally applying Christian principles according to the Word of God, leading of the Holy Ghost, preaching, teaching, etc.

It will be a difficult process as there is much security in measuring ones salvation and ministry by the very visible requirement of saints (well, female ones anyway) in old time Pentecost.
