Unclaimed realty will escheat to the state. If you were still making payments it would go to the government or their organizational representative.
The government is ultimate guarantor to the banks so in event of bank default it would assume assets and liabilities.
And for reasons too detailed to go into on the forum, (although much different reasons than AE listed) the U.S. economy IS on the verge (20-30 years max) of collapse. And no I am not an alarmist, but I am a pragmatist.

Are you an economist? Is 20 or 30 years your prediction?

rations like that would kill a dialysis patient....what sort of foods can one stock and expect to last a long long time without expiring?

Just in case.

Here almost everyone still can live off the land or supplement their food. I will admit though we are very isolated and if the planes or ships/ferrys stop it is a long paddle/swim to the mainland.

I know I am always teasing you folks but I am very serious. America is in big trouble. I am not a prophet of doom neither do I look out my windows for black choppers flying around...

Re: Are You Eliminating Debt/Backstocking Food?
Back with President Clinton was first elected I worked with a guy that thought the world was coming to an end. He told me he had a year's supply of food stockpiled. I asked him what he was going to do when folks started coming to take it from from him. His answer: "I have a year's supply of food and ten thousand rounds of my favorite ammuntion".
There is no reason not to store up a reserve. God had Joseph do so for the whole nation of Egypt, so that Isreal would not perish.
Maybe a person ought to set aside some food and make sure they have seeds to plant a garden with in the next growing season.
Yes God can and will supply, but we don't have to be stupid about it either.

My point?
God expects us to use common sense.

After the last "ice storm" we had here in West TN, where we went 14 days without electricity-- We keep enough stocked to go at least that long again. Including bottled water. We have a campstove, grill, and other ways to prepare what we do have.
I would like to have a larger emergency fund though.... and I'm working on that.

Would dry beans, rice, and pasta work? Canned tuna and chicken generally have a shelf life of 18 months to 2 yrs. Most canned veggies do also. (Of course, you'd want plenty of bottled water on hand so that you could cook those things on a camp stove)

This all reminds me of an unsaved joke I once heard:
What does a Mexican Mormon keep in his garage?
Two years' worth of stolen groceries!
