Whew thought I was going to have to change professions. I was just thinking of a friend of mine on staff at a large church who's main occupation is a mental health professional calling me and asking if I knew of a good Christian family law attorney for a client.

Wouldn't you want her to have proper (godly) representation?

Your right! I just read back through and read where you wrote attorney...sorry!
Let's see...I'll replace divorce attorney with Nude Model (Art Class).
BTW, of course, I would rather have a Christian attorney...notice, I wrote "some people" would find those professions worrisome, not me!
God bless.

Well I am somewhat prejudiced against attorneys myself, but I recognize a need for them...
They can be awfully argumentative!

I'd like to add that Christians should not be:
*undercover cia agents (or anything along that line of work)
*tv sit-com or hollywood screen actors (for most shows and movies around today anyway)
*drug dealer
* any job that prevents any kind of Christian fellowship at long stretches of time.
Of course I have no issues with Christians killing other people in the context of war. However, I have never given thought (before just now) to the idea of, "What if the other guy taking my bullet or feeling the heat from my bombs is also, a Christian?"
But then again, he's trying to kill me so I kill him first-- in the context and only in the context of war can I really rationalize all of this.
|
How about Revolutionary War? Say like, if a country started killing a million babies a year... could it be rationalized then?

Re: Jobs people should not be allowed to do?
Any job which requires you to be unrighteous, or to break a commandment. Or, if your job is a stumbling block to you, and causes you to be tempted into returning to a sinful lifestyle.
Sounds like a personal decision to me, but there are a few professions I would say are outside of Christianity entirely.

It was amusing to read some of the jobs that people came up with on this thread that could be worrisome for some folks in the church. I thought of these:
Magician
Mental Health Professional (Psychiatrist)
Tattoo Artists
Belly Dancer
Terrorist
Divorce Attorney
|
Ok, this list is funny because I was/am also a magician. And I knew a pastor for a medium sized church in Central Wisconsin who was also a tattoo artist -and a very good one.
And yes, I also know a psychiatrist or two.....
Per another post, what would be wrong with being an actor? I guess I should have put 'actor' in the initial list as well. There seem to be an ever growing number of Christian (or at least conservative) actors 'coming out of the closet' in Hollywood.

Re: Jobs people should not be allowed to do?
it's different if you leave a job because of "silent pressure" in the church. I know all about this type of pressure. We as apostolics dont realize how much pressure it is on an unchurched person coming into the "ways" of holiness. God can and does change people from the inside out (inward holiness reflected on the outside (standards)) But what we are talking about here is taking away from the work of Grace in someone's life, they look around and sometimes feel the pressure to measure up. So they make changes before actual grace brings conviction to make those changes. So that would also include a job. If it is frowned upon in anyone's attitude or or conversation or even preaching...a newbie could take that as a "hint" to make it right.
