Follow him off a cliff... or follow his example?

I follow the "rules" when I'm home.. but when I'm away I exercise a few liberties. There's no one around that will be offended by the hair on my chin or the wearing of shorts.
Go home and it's clean shaven and pants in 120* weather.

Am I supposed to follow the "rules" per the "pastor" all the time?

The problem with that is I have seen people claim there is a principle in the bible for MANY things you and I would not agree with. Used to be years ago they taught against wearing certain colors. I know one UPC preacher that preaches against zippers and pockets on ladies skirts.

When we leave the area of directly in the word to "principle" often a persons bias is incorporated into such a view, their own philosophical thinking to draw such a principle out.

And then in other cases such a principle is not evenly applied. For example some preach against even owning devices that can play video...yet all PCs have are video devices as are cell phones. The internet can arguably have the TV principle applied to it. At some point then it comes down to interpretation.

For example most here would agree not to watch things that are corrupting to a soul, most would not agree on what is corrupting. People here that are ok with TV would not say you can watch anything you want to. So they are still using the same principle generally

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Re: AFF apostolic or not?

I just checked out this thread and was appalled.
Most of you have not treated HTG right at all.
You may not agree with him but he is still a preacher
of the gospel. I didn't read where he was slamming
and mocking you and calling you names.
Maybe those are his real convictions- do you think
someone should be ridiculed for that ??? what do
we want, a forum where everyone thinks and believes
just like us or one where different thoughts can be
discussed??

Admin I ask that you take a look at this

It is a good question - though the "Thread Starter King" appears to be attempting a hijack...

But the issue really goes deeper than the arguments that OP's had in the last half of the 20th century. We have no sense of history - yet we aspire to live like a relatively small communistic community that splintered off of the already very fragmented 1st century Jewish community.

In many respects - we don't really want to be exactly like the 1st century apostles - and I don't mean just giving up air conditioning. And I really don't think that they'd want for us to be "just like" them either. Assuming that we'd even be around - which they obviously didn't - I'm certain that they would have wanted more for us (3 John 1:2 - "prosper" here means "a successful journey...").

We should be making some sort of "progress." But the "progress" being offered by the dominant "apostolics" at the close of the 20th century was a vain and hubristic progress. They wanted us to "progress" into greater and greater degrees of "holiness standards." They wanted longer and longer lists of do's and dont's. And some of the stuff is just plain superstition.

To top it all off- they peddled this brew as some sort of a "return" to a place where most of us and most of our predessors had never been before.

I think you can be respectful - there's no need to get in someone's face who doesn't agree with you. It seems that you've got a good balance here - and I've known many pastors who "allow liberties" for those on the road and such. A visit to a ball park with a family member, shorts in the Caribbean...
