Re: Proms and Pentecostals

I had the Holy Ghost when I graduated it never crossed my mind to go to the prom. The prom was on Saturday night and we had Saturday night church. I never heard our pastor say and I don't remember anyone going? It would not have been a question. I was NEVER asked as a pastor if a saint should go? The Holy Ghost should tell folks there are just places saints have no business being.

Re: Proms and Pentecostals

I don't think proms are a good enviroment for kids now.

The only bad thing that happend at my youngest's sons prom was that a girl at school chose that night to "come out of the closet" with her lesbianism.

She brought a girl and when the dancing started they were very provocative and gross in their dancing. He was grossed out and very disappointed in her.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Re: Proms and Pentecostals

I did not go to my prom...and if I am to have kids, they will not go either. Everything about prom goes against my personal belief system. I am all for a prom alternative that the church can do for those graduating seniors. I have seen it done here where they had fun (and that is the gist of it) but did a real classy deal. At the basic level, prom is about having fun with your friends...and if you are going to do an alternate to prom you need to keep that in mind. The prom alternative here was not a "God thing" (for lack of a better term), but a night of fun and fellowship done in a very classy fashion.

Re: Proms and Pentecostals

My ex-husband missed many major events in our children's lives, one of which was their senior prom. My daughter went with her now husband. She had worked hard at school, been a leader in many school activities and I saw nothing wrong with her joining in the festivities, She now has memories that I did not have of school. I was so busy being different that I have dreams of not being able to find my locker at school. I wanted things to be different for my kids, and they are still in church but still had class rings and prom as good memories of their high school experience.

My son attended two proms and we have family photes with Mom, grandma, and his red t-top car and his dates. He still lives for God, is in church, married and has a baby on the way.

My children were so afraid of their Dad and grandpa that they did things with my knowledge and supervision that Daddy never knew about..or pretended not to know about. The fear didn't keep them from doing them and having a good time though ! I am used to taking the brunt of things/blame for things from my ex, the children, and others that I just take it all in stride and 'pray' when things get a little overwhelming.

Blessings, Rhoni

Re: Proms and Pentecostals

Thank you for all the responses.

I was just curious - I know it used to be taboo. We homeschool, but many of the larger homeschool groups are now sponsoring a "prom". I would think these would be much more condusive for Christian youth because most who homeschool are conscientious Christians.

If your children are truly "conscientious Christians", they will continue to be so at the prom.

I don't doubt that. But then that was never really in question.

Rhoni, I'm sure that this is a correct statement; however, I think that putting temptations in front of our kids is asking for trouble IMO.

Life itself is a temptation. Children need to begin living for God for themselves in their teen years. All the rules and regulations will not keep a teen in line if Christ isn't in their heart.

I raised my children in church, in a moderate home. They are both still living for God and going to the prom was just a 'normal' milestone in their lives.

Many churches put so many rules on people that it keeps them in the infancy stage of Christianity. Let God and what they are taught by hearing the WORD of GOD [as opposed to manmade rules] give them the Holy Ghost muscle to live for God in whatever situation life throws at them.

Trust Jesus and your young person's relationship to HIM.

Blessings, Rhoni
