If someone were to preach that bad eyesight is caused by self-gratification and you wear glasses, would you just think nothing of it since that's not why you have bad eyes? Or would you think that the non-eyeglass wearing people are looking at you and judging you?

And that's a good reason to wear contacts.....LOL!

Sin is sin, yes, but to bring in someone's physical appearance and speaking of the sin that might have caused it would be damaging to someone who has that condition without the sin involvement.
thats why the message is for the hearer for their own benefit. We shouldnt sit around and point out others we think the message applies to.

and if someone preached the glasses thing...well, consider the source, seriously, that's just ludicrious.

But the message I heard that talked about us taking care of our bodies, was so well delivered and timely...it didnt say fat people are sinners. It said anyone who doesnt take care of them selves physically and in their appearance, is not doing what God requires of us.

She even talked about going out of the house with a deliberate ratty, unkempt appearance. Not someone who might be messy from work or something (LR DONT YELL AT ME I"M NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU WHEN YOU"VE BEEN WORKING IN YOUR YARD) But those that look like they just rolled outta bed and didnt do anything to themselves....long stringy unkept hair...you know the type.

It was great! I appreciated her having the courage to preach the message

I agree that preaching about how we care for ourselves is appropriate without picking something out of the air to use as an example. I've heard this kind of preaching and teaching and I have to do this as well with patients in a realistic manner.

And don't worry about LR. She's been too busy for this place lately, so say what you want....hahahaha. And she would get your point also.

Quite a few. My whole family on my mother's side and my husband's side are overweight and it is from overeating.

Just like you cant look at a perfect pentecostal on the outside and tell they are full of all kinds of junk and sin.....it isnt our place or our business.

but the sin is sin none the less
Right!

And I wouldn't say 'most people'. There are lots of reasons to be overweight and sometimes it has nothing to do with food or metabolism. A bad heart, for instance, can make someone appear to be overweight but it's actually fluid retention. A bad liver can make someone appear overweight. Kidney failure can do the same.

Just some examples.
When you put Food above God then it is sin.

Depending on the method of the preaching. Sounds like what Theresa describes is appropriate, but I've personally heard preaching where it wasn't appropriate.

And since so many people associate being overweight with gluttony (just look at this thread, for instance), I would be quite uncomfortable listening to that kind of message.

Take care of my body, use hygiene techniques, etc, sure. That's good for anyone to hear. Eating right is also useful for anyone, but preaching against gluttony? Do we really know that definition?

Which goes to show that it isn't always what is said necessarily but

the spirit and manner and MOTIVE for saying it! And the way they say it!!

But calling people names like "Blue Denim Whales" just sounds

awful to me. They would lose me right there! I probably wouldn't

hear anything else they said!

Blessings,
