Not sure where you are but I have been a part of sports in TN, IL and in AZ and it was in a rare occasion that the females were too masculine. There have been several, but not tons. There are too many life lessons that can be learned by playing sports that worrying over masculine girls is really a small issue. If you trust your child has not sexuality issues themselves then why worry. If you the parent do the right teaching the chances of them following your teachings when presented with a bad situation are really good. I have heard parents tell me this before like they are worried about their kid catching the gay bug like it is the flu or something.

Re: Apostolic girls and sports
Refraining from competitive sports will not warp a child. However, ALL children need regular physical activity to be healthy. So, if you can't allow your children to be involved in team sports, then make sure that your whole family is active on a regular basis. There are oodles of things you can do.
Take up hiking or rock climbing; camp out; go to the park every Saturday to play softball; make sure the kids play outside for an hour or so every day before they're allowed to settle down with a book or the tv or a video game. Limit TV time to weekends only, and only 1-2 hours a week. Train as a family for a marathon, and participate in a charity drive of some sort. Most cities have them several times a year. Tulsa has several great places for frisbee golf, impromptu volleyball games, and quite a few walking, jogging, or biking trails. For that matter, just teach good habits--park a long way from the doors of the grocery store and walk. Take the stairs, never the elevator or the escalator. Don't drop them off at the gate when you go to the zoo. Park out in the parking lot and skip the trolley.
There is no excuse for children to not be active, even if you don't participate in competitive sports.

Re: Apostolic girls and sports
Well not only does my daughter play on the basketball team but I am both the boys and girls basketball coach. The girls wear culottes with a shirt under their jersey. My daughter loves it, I enjoy it. It is a private christian school and on top of that (*gasp*) it is affiliated with and managed by my UPC church.

this is how I grew up at the school that FAC in Knoxville, TN has. It can be done whether dress code is a big issue or not as you well know.

I like what you said about having an agreement before giving an answer. As parents our first responsibility is to our kids. If one can not make adjustments for their kids what can you do? Some people are too holy for their and their childrens good. There is always something that can be worked out.
I had a parent tell me once something along the lines of 'I will not let me kids be is sports cause of the dress code. They are spending the time that would have been given to sports and using it to study and getting smarter so they can get a great job and suppot me.' They were partly kidding, but I rebutted that it doesn't matter how book smart a kid is if they don't take care of their body which houses their brain then they have little chance. It does little good to have a great brain that you can use for 40 years when you could have had a great brain you could use for 80 years.

And let's face it...at a job interview, if the body is big and bloated, this can convey greed and laziness. Or if the body looks unhealthy, this can convey a person needing to access Healthcare benefits.

I know several UPC/ALJC (even ultra-con) PK's who play or have played basketball and other competitive sports. They turned out alright.

I am not a PK but contrary to popular opinion I turned out ok and every game in basketball in highschool I wore long running pants and a t-shirt under my jersey. It can be done--but doesn't have to be.

As a SS director in my UPC church, I promote kids (including mine) playing sports. We currently have 8 kids between the ages of 5 and 12 that play soccer with the local league and 3 of them are girls. The 5 year old girl proudly told me that she scored a goal last saturday! Our pastor has no problem with this. I remember the days of "no organized sports" and I am glad that is left in the past. Our local soccer league has games on saturdays so it works for us.

Most of the ones I know didn't bother with such modesty.
