Any Electricians here?

What is the best way to extend the length of a power adapter, say for a modem?

Is there a certain kind of extension cord I can use?

I work with low voltage, but this is a no brainer for me. Just use a normal grounded extension cord. The kind with three prongs not the thin brown ones with only two prongs. Unless your modem power supply only has two prongs then you could use the thin brown kind with only two prongs.

You modem doesn't draw that much current so a heavy duty cord isn't needed.

Not needed, but good to have.

The longer the run, the heavier guage cord needed.

How long do you need it to be? how long is it now?

How proficient are you with wiring electrical devices?
\What are the specs on the adaptor? load, amps, etc?

If your going to run it a mile or two you better run a number 8. If fifty or hundered feet a number 12 will work.

At the moment just a few feet, but I want to mount the router in a place where the signal reaches other areas. I can't do the electrical if it comes to that but there is a brother that says he can, but I don't want to go through that much trouble

Re: Any Electricians here?

Are you running only the one device from the adaptor?

If so, an extension cord should be fine, but make sure you go with a heavier guage extension than what is hard wired into the device. Depending on the load rating, it probably has 12 or 14 guage, but make sure. (the lower the number, the thicker the wire. if it has 14, get a 12 guage extension.)
