I think some of them still do - they get people down to the alter and have them say " Jesus Jesus Jesus" over and over again and again sometimes til they was frothing
You've just descibed the majority of black pentecostal holiness churches. I did not see anyone get the Holy Ghost any other way except through tarrying (that was until I came over to the multi-cultural holiness church). The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ still makes you tarry. Matter of fact, I use to tarry with souls all the time up until this year (2008). Kinda shocked me when I didn't see anyone on their knees at the altar of my current church crying JESUS JESUS JESUS over and over till they were filled. It is what it is . . . (I however still believe in tarrying....it works!)

What kind of rationale do you have for this? We have coffee bars at all of our churches. It's just a place for the people to congregate and get to know each other and for new people to assimilate before and after church. We don't allow people to bring the food/drinks into the sanctuary for service, and the coffee bar is closed during services.

Who said that they were coming to KH for answers? It sounds to me like they were inviting him to give his input. There is a huge difference. It doesn't sound like they invited him to address the crowd and teach them how it is done. There are a lot of people I ask questions of. That doesn't mean I consider them the authority on the subject.

It certainly is not all like that. (thank God) However, when the kind of pressure is placed upon a person that the HGB is required or someone is going to hell, it places an unbelieveable pressure on them. Big difference between that and it being a gift, albeit an AWESOME gift of and from God!

I also want to know where in the Bible we find the practice of tarrying, (other than Ac. 2 for the 1st time) or a HG blow out, or any where an emotional display took place like takes place in many OP's altars? I'm not against those, all I'm saying is that we need to be careful what we say MUST take place and what happens spontaneously.

No,I don't believe our churches should have coffee bars.Let me try to explian where that I am coming from. Our college and career group has a coffee night once a month we meet at the church and fellowship.

I wonder HOW can this be a cultural thing?
When I received the holy ghost, it was in an instant (the moment I asked God to forgive me) while standing during song service. There was no asking/begging/waiting/begging some more/having my head shaken/prayed over for hours/still more waiting/told I 'almost got it!'/wondering if 'next time' will be it/still waiting/crying and pleading/more hands layed on/and finally one magic night hearing 'you got it!'.

No it all happened in about 1 - 1 1/2 heartbeats. Repentance and infilling (with speaking in other tongues).

AND.... no one had to tell me "now the devil will lie to you and tell you 'you really didn't get it'!". I was convinced enough by the experience that the instant change in my life.

It just IS a cultural thing. Its OK to learn something new every now and again.

The Black Holiness Movement has always been into tarrying services and they ALLLLLLLLLL are conducted alike. Now you've learned something new.

Oh, and lets not forget tarry and purge night. Lord knows the old school holiness church loved purging services. (yuck) lol.

Why? Because church buildings are sacred? They aren't

I was at a UPC church about 6 months ago or so and both saw and heard the UPC pastor get in front of a young girl, and told her to say, "Lalalalalala...like that."

He went to the pulpit a few minutes later to announce that she'd received the Holy Ghost.

I stood there in shock.
