I will say in my defense I now know to call 911 but I wasn't thinking.

First I froze, then I slowly got out of bed and got on the floor beside the bed.The bedroon door was closed, I don't recall it the door locked or not. I was petrified. I waited to see if there was more noise but didn't hear anything.
I stayed on the floor and wrapped in a blanket eventually slept.
The next morning I was hestitant to leave the room but knew I had to so I started on the "tour" of house. In the back hall I found a large amount of broken glass---the globe for ceiling light fixture had come loose and fell to the floor.
I felt silly but what can I say? I was alone and I am a wimp!

***** Maybe this belongs in the village idiot tab..
I doubt I could have gone to sleep until I KNEW the house was clear.

Re: How would you have handled this?

Out of bed with the Model 1911 "cocked and locked" pray'n somebody is not about to go into eternity.......me or some other knucklehead.....

Dogs make can be a great alarm system......but even the best system has false alarms.....Our dogs kept barking one night several weeks ago. I got up several times with Sammy (my Colt 1911). I'd go into the living room where they where and they'd be barking at the front door. I'd ease the curtain back for a look and there would be nothing. After the second or third time it dawn on me it was the cats that camp out on our front porch since my dear wife started feel'n bad for them and feeding them.......

I would have made the most fearsome sound I could think of.......the sound of a shell being loaded into a 12 gauge pump shotgun!

Great home defense weapon, ain't gotta be a marksman, just point it in the general direction and pull the trigger!

I can't believe all the guns you all have in your homes! WOW!!!!!

We've never had one here in our house. My dad had guns when we were growing up, but they were for hunting only. Never for self-defense. They were kept in a locked guncase.

Girl, we live in the country. We don't have that old shotgun anymore. We have a new fancy one. Put in a clip and go!!!!!!!! But it is not for shooting people. I am in no way advocating that. First you call 911 if you suspect trouble, then get the gun!!!!!!!!!!

In the South we have a habit of taking care of ourselves.

In fact, I couldn't imagine not have a weapon to defend myself if needed.

Re: How would you have handled this?

Since we moved into our new house, we have had a couple of scares during the night. Our dog is the main culprit who will suddenly freak out at something -usually a dream and act like something/someone is in the house. After a few seconds he calms down and is asleep a minute later, but the first time was a terrifying.
I suddenly jumped up and started growling at the door, and I instantly shouted as loud as I can, "Hermes! Get him!" (anyone in the house or our neighbors, would have heard me). Somehow this sort of slapped everyone into focus.

No one was there.

Right now, we sleep with a baseball bat one one side of the bet and my 2 million candle power spot light on my side. I figure ANYONE who gets this in his face in the middle of the night is going to panic long enough for us to apply the baseball bat.
