Correction

When thinking of the topic of correction it seems that church is the only place that people really have a problem and negative attitude about correction.

2 Tim 3:16 states that all scripture has been given by God and is profitable for doctrine and correction (paraphrased). Well, correction in doctrine is when someone tells you that your belief system is wrong or that the decisions you are making do not line up with the Word.

When Pastors display this type of behavior people tend to call them controlling, question who they think they are, and a whole lot of other things. But in other areas of life we view correction as a good thing. Consider the following:

The golfer will actually pay the golf pro to correct his swing so he can golf better
A person in college is their by their own choice and typically paying their own tuition and will submit papers for correction to determine if they are understanding the subject matter.
A person at work who has been given an assignment will typically approach the supervision and explain they way they understand the project and how they intend to go about it so they can be corrected before they invest time and energy.
In flying an airplane it is a series of corrections due to winds and atmospheric pressure which will cause the plane to get off course. Therefore, correction is valuable as it allows you to reach your destination

I could go on and on, but when it comes to our spiritual life no one wants to be corrected. "How dare that Pastor tell me I'm living wrong!"

Do you think that maybe the devil understand the value of authority in our life?

Interesting.

However the phrase "apples to oranges" comes to mine.

Of the four bullet points, the Golf Pro teaching the amateur how to golf probably comes the closest. But, there are vast differences between correct a plane based on wind patterns and someone dictating your personal life based on THEIR opinions of what your personal life (or "a" personal life) should be.

I would say that you changed the context when you stated "dictating your personal life."

Consider the golf pro. He corrects your swing and tells you the correct way to swing, but in the end you have the choice of how you will swing.

Dictate is not a principle of the Bible, but correction is. In the end we all have the right to live how we want, but as Proverbs says...where there is no strong voice of authority the people cast off restraint.

I don't like it when a doctor says, "This is gonna hurt," and yet I know it is for my good. Sometimes I don't need to walk away from a message always feeling all good, especially if there is something I need to correct, that left uncorrected, could cause me harm.

Usually when they say this either won't hurt a bit, or sting just a little, is when I start grimacing.
