JERUSALEM – The lawyer representing Henry Louis Gates Jr., the Harvard professor at the center of a national race controversy, was a mentor of both Barack and Michelle Obama and served on the president's black advisory council.

Charles Ogletree Jr., himself a Harvard University professor, is closely linked to the Black Panthers and to radical black ideology. He is a key member of the reparations movement and once pursued the possibility of bringing a class action lawsuit to win reparations for descendants of African slaves.

"I met Barack when he arrived at Harvard Law School in fall of 1988. He was quiet and unassuming, but had an incredibly sharp mind and a thirst for knowledge," Ogletree said in an interview last year with Essence Magazine.

Gates and obama are role players.

Ogletree and Gates gave starkly different reports of the incident than police.

A report from Sgt. James Crowley said Gates was shouting so loudly it was impossible to talk on his police radio. Crowley said he handcuffed Gates on the porch after the professor shouted, "This is what happens to black men in America."

Ok if Obama is right and both sides just over reacted and needed a friendly pow wow...I want to know

Why was the first thing out of the profs mouth a charge of racism? And why on his website after the fact did he continue to make it an issue that he was black?

Why did the cop over react? Was he a racist after all? Is he just a rogue cop that won't take you know what from anyone? Or is it just blacks he won't take anything from?

BTW this was no Rodney King incident. The good Prof was not slammed to the floor or made to take a felony stop position. He was not beated nor as far as we know was he abused verbally..

Heres the thing Prax...just as white folks get tired of folks pulling out the race card so fast, people of color get tired of white folk jumping on the "you pulled out the race card" so quick...you mentioned Rodney...with all the tape and evidence, there are/were STILL folks who sided eith the police on it, AMAZING!!! I actually heard/read it myself, "well, you dont know what happened off camera"???? What???? Sheesh, so it really does go both ways. Search Fredericton police on YouTube, we just had a military dude just get beat unconcious by 3 cops, another case of "mistaken identity". This stuff does exist, I've been a victim if it, including a gun drawn on me for no reason, and being investigated for 3 months undercover because of my "terrorist" looking activities...a brown man with a video camera, called into the police. It's no fun, really it isn't. To be questioned just because the color of your skin can really play with your mind and make one question everyone, thankfully I serve a great God, and He gives me peace.

Food for thought...if you haven't walked in a man of color's shoes...you just don't know what it's like.

The first thing out of the professor's mouth was crying "racism" because that is what a generation of black Americans have been force fed from their so called leaders.

They do their race a disservice by being so reactionary, racist, and prejudiced. When they act as he did they are the ones prejudice as they assume they are being asked to do something because they are black.

Black folks need to take personal responsibility for some common sense and rational thinking. You can't pull the race card every time you feel like it.

Was the cop supposed to ignore disorderly conduct because the man was black? Are we to exclude black folks from being arrested for disorderly conduct because they just aren't capable of restraining themselves? Or do we excuse them because of past wrongs? To me it is insulting to make excuses for inexcusable behaviour.

I am so tired of the chip on many Black Americans shoulder that I could throw up. Your great, great, great Grampa was a slave 150 years ago now get over it, get an education, get married before having your six children, and get a job! Start emphasizing the importance of education, family, work ethic, etc in your culture and you can lift yourself up from poverty as so many destitute Vietnamese boat people did who came to America with nothing but the shirt on their backs and have made great lives here.

There's an old skit, humorous, black folk put on the make-up and live white, some of you white folk should do the opposite and get the surprise of your life...well, there goes my AFF career, I done called you out, Internet suicide, at least I was man enough to say it. You all act like Gates overacted, maybe he did, but you don't know ANYTHING about the straw upon straw, that broke this camels back, not a single one of you!!!!!
