What does the Bible say about Modesty?

Being dressed in a appropiate manner is a result of modesty,not modesty in it's self.

Topic is leading astray. AQP, there is no black and white definition. And that our brothers and sisters all wore different attire over the centuries, this tells me we there is a part of modesty that is "relative" (gasp) to culture, all in the bounds of decency. A missionary to Iran may not want to wear a skirt even to the knee cap if they wish to be effective. They may want to consider covering themselves more.

Sherri mentioned before that when she went to Africa, it was considered immodest to show your calves, but permissible to go topless. That was interesting, I thought.

I do think that modesty is culturally driven, but that doesn't mean that anything a culture thinks is okay necessarily is. Especially when that culture is a very sensuous culture, like much of ours is.

I still think it's INTERESTING that clothing is such a big issue in our denomination, and yet we're not coming up with oodles of scriptures on the subject.

The fact that there is not much for scripture is why it's such a big issue though. Think hair, think eschatology, think all the great wondrous "mysteries" of the Word.

I agree, they are culturally driven. Interesting that topless in parts of Africa is not sensual at all. Culture created that definition. In that sense, how can we avoid the cultural definitions on these matters?

Let's take shorts. Shorts that end about 3 inches above your knee. Most Pentecostal churches would say unequivocally - no. Culture thinks that shorts of that length are extremely modest.

Who's right?

I'll admit that I don't even blink when I see someone (non-Pentecostal) wearing shorts of that length.

Is there scripture to help us with this?

I don't know of any scriptures. I personally stay on the conservative side of society. I don't wear shorts, but my girls did this past summer. I will wear sleeveless, but it has to come up under my arms. I don't like clingy clothes or anything tight. I was raised wearing swim suits, but was taught modesty.

I have taught what I believe is modest and I can't say that my girls follow it all the time. I believe it has to be God convicting and from the heart when they submit to the Holy Ghost. I believe they will mature and grow as they get older.

I truly believe in the Holy Ghost convicting and modesty has a lot to do with the a person's spirit.

When a person is modest in spirit, they do not flaunt anything... from wealth to flesh.
