Incredible! His impersonation is flawless! Are they related?
This brings back memories. I was fortunate enough to hear the late Bro. Mahaney on several occasions. I never knew him personally, but looking back, it always seemed like he struggled with the culture that was/is prevalent in Pentecost (and UPC churches specifically), that saints could achieve their salvation with the right performance and observance of "holiness standards." He had a great understanding of God's grace. I remember him saying, (paraphrasing) "
Do you really think when you say a curse word in the car (when that other driver cuts you off), you've suddenly lost out with God? Some people have this understanding of God that you're either in or out depending on one personal mistake. In and out, in and out...Hal-le-lu-jah!"
Bro. Mahaney like to recall his rough life "before Christ." I remember him saying, "
In the world, I carried a switch blade and a sawed off shotgun. Now I carry an Acts, and two thirty-eights!"
And I always enjoyed when he shared his "conversations" with God. I remember one in particular, he was sitting in an airport when a beautiful lady walked by. He said, "
I just said, good job God! Hal-le-lu-jah!" ...That one always seemed to make those good 'ole conservative brethren sitting on the platform a wee bit nervous.
I appreciated his ministry. He was very comfortable in his own skin, and didn't mind acknowledging his own "humanness." God Bless Bro. Mahaney!
