Pressing-On, we wondered about the same thing. I think that there were several factors involved in why he got the A in tutoring and not in class. The biggest reason is......
1) Keith has ADHD and so by the time it is time for homework, his medication is clearly worn off. We've tried every combination available to fix this for him, but nothing seems to work right. The biggest reason that he fails these classes is not because he cannot do the work. He can. The problem is that any homework either does not get done or does not get turned in. The Psychiatrist who did an all-day neuro-psych test on him last year was very clear that the reason for this is because of the ADHD.
2) The other thing is that Keith really connected well with the older man who tutored him over the summer. And because Paul is a retired school teacher, he took no bull from Keith at all. At school, the teacher is this young guy who is much more interested in who is playing football and who is wrestling, than in making sure that the kids get the lesson. Unfortunately, they stuck him with the same teacher for Sophomore Geometry now. Gee whiz. Doncha think if it wasn't a good thing last year, it's probably not gonna be a good thing this year either.
We're looking at Home Schooling. But honestly, I'm less and less convinced that this is a good option FOR US. And private school is out of the question for financial reasons (remember the aneurysm 3 years ago? We're still paying on that!). So public school really is our only option. Sadly.

Re: Gabby's
Margie, I've actually seen them boost grades so that the parents won't know the child is failing.
If they'll let you, at the end of this year you might go with him to the counselor and arrange a schedule with teachers that do work. Don't tell him/her its because the teachers aren't good. Just work his schedule around so that he has other classes the hours that teacher is available. For instance, insist that he has lunch a certain period to get out of certain classes, band, history, science, whatever. Mom did that. We actually caught mistakes the counselor made to the schedule... they try to fill certain classes and don't care who they put in. I ended up in "drop out" English one year that way!
there are good teachers in any school. Sometimes it is just hard to find them. Their classes aren't hard to fill, after all.

LOL! The credit would have to go to Tina! She posted about missing Gabby's and all the Gabby girls.
It's been awhile!

Re: Gabby's
It's too early in the morning for me to be posting. I haven't had my coffee yet.
Yesterday was an extremely long day, I slept very little last night because of the loud thunder--and today started by my hubby waking me up saying his blood sugar level is high this morning. Higher this morning when he got up than it was yesterday when they transported him to the hospital. I tried to insist he stay home and let me call his doctor at 8am-- but he wouldn't. He went to work anyway. I'll call his doctor anyway, and she will probably end up telling me to have him come see her today.
I just had some morning prayer time, and I'm going back to bed for another hour or so. I'll check back in later.

Not good, Tina. He really didn't need to go to work, but I am praying that God will honor his faith and regulate that sugar level without him having to go back to the doc. Keep us posted!!

You've met him and spent time around him. You KNOW how stubborn he is! LOL
He was determined to NOT miss another day on the paycheck.
I talked to him on his break, and it's back down to 146-- still a little higher than I like, but much better than the reading this morning!
I've been praying for Jon. How is he today? Do y'all need anything?

Sherri, an IEP is an Individual Education Plan. It is a legally binding document, so once they've determined what they need to do to help the child succeed, the teachers are then required by law to do what the IEP says. At least that's what I'm told. It does things like if a kid is distracted easily, they might be put in a quiet room for tests. Or if homework is an issue, maybe they have to do extra work in the classroom instead of homework (that would help Keith tremendously!)
We got a call today from the assistant principal. He's the only one I really have any confidence in, so I was glad to hear from him. He has scheduled a meeting on Monday at 9:45 with Walt, me, himself and the school psychologist. Pray please!
Tammy, how is Jon doing? I've been praying him and Tina's husband both today.
Tina, 145 is high, but as long as it goes down from there, that's ok. Mine goes that high (or higher) sometimes. So far, so good
