Some bibles are different than others as far as how they translated, what method and choice of words
Others are different in which greek text they choose as their base text to translate from.
Some translations are paraphrases.
Some are easier reading than others.
I personally like the NKJV and the ESV

- There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
- The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
- Every sinner must repent of their sins.
- That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
- That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
- The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

The Message is a great read, I likewise resort to the NKJV or the ESV for study, which is what Eugene Peterson recommends. He wrote the Message, after thirty-five years of pastoring and explaining scripture to his congregation, and being asked to publish his notes, so he finally did.
Sometimes we need to read something like the Message or the New Living Bible and just let the Holy Spirit speak in a way that our tradition doesn't allow. If you don't ever look a scripture except thru your tradition's lens you will be limited in what the Holy Spirit can reveal to you.

Here are some really good resources in your quest to find the right English version(s) for your personal study.
I use the English Standard Version (fairly literal) and the The Message (thought for thought) the Amplified Bible (hyper literal) and Youngs Literal Translation (hyper literal) and sometimes the Contemporary English Version (middle of the road)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_...e_translations
http://www.bible.ca/b-many-versions.htm
I also use eSword which is a freeware bible study program with most versions of the bible you can use http://www.e-sword.net/ the various extra versions are for the most part free downloads and just click on them for them to self install into the main esword program.

You can do some comparisons of different Bible translations by checking out different scriptures at BlueLetterBible.com
Personally, I have KJV, the Message, NKJV, NIV and several others. But the one I return to over and over is the NIV.

Re: Bible's 101 .. help!!!
I must say i always go back to the KJV but i just got the 3:16 new testament with psalms and proverbs (max lucado) and have been reading since i got back from half prices books yesterday ...
I have a NCV that i like but i do not like that god's word is not in red.
and i have My utmost for his highest that i adore
what are the big differences between niv and ncv
as well as if your looking for the truest word what bible would you be searching for?
The living bible ??? any opinions on this

The Living Bible has for years been criticized as a "paraphrase" and not a "word for word" translation. Given the fact that almost every other translation includes some element of "paraphrasing" (See for example Acts 26:10 in the KJV), this sort of criticism is kind of empty.
The NCV is an update of the International Children's Bible. It is aimed at young teens and youth readers.
Which type of Bible you use will just depend on what you are doing with what you read. The 3:16 New Testament & Psalms is good for devotional reading and the notes help to fill in a bit of detail that you might overlook. The disadvantage is that it obviously doesn't contain the whole Old Testament.
If you were expounding or preaching the Bible in a preaching or teaching ministry then you might want to get a "more serious" Study Bible like a KJV, NKJV or one of the many others. These can also be found in different editions however that include devotional approaches as opposed to exegesis (preaching and teaching).
You might even try the local libary. Check out a Bible that seems interesting and if it's a good fit then you can spend the money for one of your own. Just a thought.

Re: Bible's 101 .. help!!!
I prefer a Bible from the Majority Text. Assumedly these texts are compared with others and have been found to be the majority consensus of the known texts.
The KJV is from a strain of the Majority Text called The Received Text. Not exactly the same but closer to the MT than to the Alexandrian type Bibles consisting of a few older texts.
The New King James points out the Majority Text readings in footnotes.
The only fully developed Majority Text Bible I know of is the World English Bible found here.
