Does it say that these statements are ex-cathedra from another Bernard piece?

There is no indication of it on the article... I checked the first few pages to see if there was a "reference" or "bibliography" section... nothing.

Under Salvation... "We enter into the New Testament church through faith in Jesus as Lord and Saviour, repentance from sin, water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the inial sign of tongues (See Acts 2:1-4, 36-39; 11:13-17)"

Re: Another "Apostolic Identity" in March 2010 PH.

As long as I have been in the UPC there were times where they emphasized standards. Other times they emphasized the Godhead etc etc. It's a recurring theme and I doubt there is a conspiracy afoot

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Re: Another "Apostolic Identity" in March 2010 PH.

What we need to hear is creating Apostolic History, instead of Apostolic Identity.... you can be a "poser" (90's word for imposter)... but history, well guess what young people?

You have to create your own history with God!!

You can inherit "Apostolic Identity" but it will only get you so far. History takes time to happen, and you make your own history with God irregardless of your lineage!

In my 50+ years in or around the UPC I have never seen a time when standards and the Godhead were both not the main emphasis. Not just main but the extreme focus.

Obviously there are exceptions but I am speaking about the majority of churches and the vast majority of campmeetings, conferences, and articles.

Even when the stated topic of a sermon is not standards or the godhead they usually end up being a prominent part of the content.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

You can cheat on your wife and keep your license. You can't cheat on the dress code and keep your license. District Superintendent said if their identity is lost if the dress code is compromised. That is a recipie for disaster.

Where does one divert the majority his attention: the major issue!

You don't buy a new roof if your basement is flooding. It seems to me (an outsider from Michigan) that the UPCi know's it's losing its stronghold on the "Holiness Look" and diverting its attention on not losing its foothold, rather than preaching Jesus.

Here's a naive thought.
Why not create a Christ identity?
