The first article said methane is not toxic and not even dangerous unless it is in a concentrated enough space to displace the oxygen. Now just to put things in perspective, the earth's atmosphere contains:

Gas Volume
Nitrogen (N2) 780,840 ppmv (78.084%)
Oxygen (O2) 209,460 ppmv (20.946%)
Argon (Ar) 9,340 ppmv (0.9340%)
Carbon dioxide (CO2) 390 ppmv (0.0390%)
Neon (Ne) 18.18 ppmv (0.001818%)
Helium (He) 5.24 ppmv (0.000524%)
Methane (CH4) 1.79 ppmv (0.000179%)
Krypton (Kr) 1.14 ppmv (0.000114%)
Hydrogen (H2) 0.55 ppmv (0.000055%)
Nitrous oxide (N2O) 0.3 ppmv (0.00003%)
Carbon monoxide (CO) 0.1 ppmv (0.00001%)
Xenon (Xe) 0.09 ppmv (9 × 10−6%)
Ozone (O3) 0.0 to 0.07 ppmv (0% to 7 × 10−6%)
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) 0.02 ppmv (2 × 10−6%)
Iodine (I) 0.01 ppmv (1 × 10−6%)
Ammonia (NH3) trace
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Earth

The earth's atmosphere is soo much larger in volume than the grand canyon that it is ridiculous to even compare the volume of the two. Even considering that the methane released in the oil spill was under pressure (which means it would take up a larger volume at atmospheric pressure), there is no way that this could skew Methanes percentage to even 1%. (To do so would mean that the oil spill would have to release 5000 times more Methane than is currently in the whole atmosphere...)

The second article said methane was explosive/flammable if it ever got to 5%. There is no danger of this happening for the Earth's atmosphere.

The third article cited a specific case where methane ignited in a very closed mining space.

The fourth article said BP was going to burn off the captured oil.

EDIT: I did a little extra calculation for you.

Earth's atmosphere contains about 30,000,000 cubic kilometers of methane. The Grand canyon has a volume of about 12000 cubic kilometers. If that 12,000 cubic kilometers was all methane at a pressure of 1,000,000 times more than atmospheric then this would be 12,000,000,000 cubic kilometers of methane. 12,000,000,000 / 30,00,000 is only 400 times more Methane than is currently in the atmosphere. This is no where near the 5000 times we would need to even get 1% of the Earth's atmosphere to be Methane. (Of course I should note that there are other factors which I cannot take into account, such as the earths atmosphere not having a uniform pressure which may affect my calculation. The temperature differences of methane in the atmosphere and the methane is being released may also affect my calculation.)
Ok, but I warned you. Can't say I didn't warn you if you get sick and croak Get it CROAK (jfrog)

First of all I want to say THANK YOU for pinpointing the source of this nonsense about methane from that oil spill killing people. At least we now know to avoid everything from Alex Jones unless we want to be as big of a laughing stock as he is.

To prove he is a laughing stock, here are some quotes of Alex Jones that were posted on another site.

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread231813/pg1
Quote:
"This is only the beginning. In the next few years, in this second phase--the period of escalating violence. They're gonna allow limited nuclear exchanges." "There's going to be more. This is only the kickoff." (9/13/01)

"Within 2 years I'm predicting...that you're going to see a suitcase nuke in this country. You're probably going to see a release in a few years of something communicable. & I am predicting that you will see a lot of conventional bombings...in the next year or so." (10/18/01)

"I'm telling you now...there's a very good chance there gonna blow something up overseas or here." "The evidence is all tilting toward...blowing up a building. They're really setting us up for a smallpox attack." Chemical attacks are "almost a guarantee in the next six months or so." (9/26/02)

"They're preparing for new terrorist attacks that are much larger. & they're planning to bring in foreign armies....The U.S. government is going to engage in large terrorist attacks domestically & probably internationally...They may kill millions of Americans." There was going to be a nuclear release in Iraq, an international depression, formation of a world government, probably a nuclear release in Iraq, an international depression, a world government formed. Also, "They may kill millions of Americans." (7/11/02)

They're going to blow more stuff up.
(4/13/04)

"I predict Arnold is gonna save children at a school shooting, or there'll be some type of bombing, & he will land by helicopter & run in & direct things. I predict it....I see it all aligning. I see it all coming together. I see their plan, clear as day....He'll fly in & things will be burninig & he'll run into it & save someone." [circa March of 2005. Kinda proves Alex is living a fantasy, doesn't it?]

Alex also said (several times) they were going to roll out Osama bin Laden "on ice" before the 2004 election.

Alex said they were going to blow up Washington DC before the election.

Alex said Saddam Hussein had been taken to Cuba.
Need I say more? Alex Jones has a record of being dead wrong and borderline nut job in his predictions and him saying the methane gas from the oil spill is going to kill people is just his latest.

If you watched the videos you would know there are 9 parts all different.
Also I did not say that Methane Gas was killing people(YET) and I also know that Alex Jones and Lindsay Williams are fear mongers! Now in having said that I believe the worse case scenario would be loss of marine life(lots of marine life) and when hurricane season rolls in this oil spill is going to get real ugly! But don't be surprised if people don't get sick if this oil spill is not contained soon!
Just sayin....Common sense is where we are lacking in America!Just look what we have going on in different states and over in the mid East.Yet some refuse to see and therefore some are going to be surprised as if a thief in the night has come upon them because they are deaf and blind to the things Jesus has told us to watch for

Signs of the End of the Age
Matthew 24:1 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

4 Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,[a]' and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9 "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15 "So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,'[b] spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. 22 If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.

26 "So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

29 "Immediately after the distress of those days
" 'the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'[c]

30 "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[d]is near, right at the door. 34 I tell you the truth, this generation[e] will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The Day and Hour Unknown
36 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 "Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, 'My master is staying away a long time,' 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

People may not believe this is the last days and that's fine but we are not promised tomorrow so I hope folks are ready to meet the Lord even if the rapture is far from happening in our life time that we live on this side of eternity! I hope were all ready!

BTW. Fox News just reported oil spill spreading further east. What do we think will happen when the oil gets in the current going up the East Coast? It's so clear this being day 60 something and we know man does not have the ability to stop this oil from gushing out into the ocean waters of the earth.Think about in the days of Noah it concerned the waters of the earth and no man could stop it.Man has tapped into something that they simply do not know how to stop the gushing oil that is poisoning the waters of earth. This sort of thing has never occurred before in the history of man,not an oil spill of this size from an ARTESIAN OIL WELL http://www.audioenglish.net/dictiona...esian_well.htm

I don't plan on watching an hour and a half worth of videos because you can't type out the relevant information in a nice post.

As far as Methane Gas from the oil spill not killing people yet... I've not been arguing that it hasn't yet. I've been arguing that IT WILL NEVER KILL PEOPLE.

(By the way, Matthew 24 has absolutely nothing to do with an oil spill)

Re: Let's Talk About....

How the ultimate BP Gulf disaster could kill millions

Disturbing evidence is mounting that something frightening is happening deep under the waters of the Gulf of Mexico—something far worse than the BP oil gusher.

Warnings were raised as long as a year before the Deepwater Horizon disaster that the area of seabed chosen by the BP geologists might be unstable, or worse, inherently dangerous.

What makes the location that Transocean chose potentially far riskier than other potential oil deposits located at other regions of the Gulf? It can be summed up with two words: methane gas.

The same methane that makes coal mining operations hazardous and leads to horrendous mining accidents deep under the earth also can present a high level of danger to certain oil exploration ventures.

Location of Deepwater Horizon oil rig was criticized

More than 12 months ago some geologists rang the warning bell that the Deepwater Horizon exploratory rig might have been erected directly over a huge underground reservoir of methane.

Documents from several years ago indicate that the subterranean geologic formation may contain the presence of a huge methane deposit.

None other than the engineer who helped lead the team to snuff the Gulf oil fires set by Saddam Hussein to slow the advance of American troops has stated that a huge underground lake of methane gas—compressed by a pressure of 100,000 pounds per square inch (psi)—could be released by BP's drilling effort to obtain the oil deposit.

Current engineering technology cannot contain gas that is pressurized to 100,000 psi.

By some geologists' estimates the methane could be a massive 15 to 20 mile toxic and explosive bubble trapped for eons under the Gulf sea floor. In their opinion, the explosive destruction of the Deepwater Horizon wellhead was an accident just waiting to happen.

Yet the disaster that followed the loss of the rig pales by comparison to the apocalyptic disaster that may come.

A cascading catastrophe

According to worried geologists, the first signs that the methane may burst its way through the bottom of the ocean would be fissures or cracks appearing on the ocean floor near the damaged well head.

Evidence of fissures opening up on the seabed have been captured by the robotic submersibles working to repair and contain the ruptured well. Smaller, independent plumes have also appeared outside the nearby radius of the bore hole itself.

According to some geological experts, BP's operations set into motion a series of events that may be irreversible. Step-by-step the drilling team committed one error after another.

Congressmen Henry Waxman, D-CA, and Bart Stupak, D-MI, in a letter sent to BP CEO Tony Hayward, identified 5 missteps made by BP during the period culminating with the explosion.

Waxman, chair of the Congressional energy panel and Stupak, the head of the subcommittee on oversight and investigations, said, "The common feature of these five decisions is that they posed a trade-off between cost and well safety."

The two Representatives also stated in the 14-page letter to Hayward that "Time after time, it appears that BP made decisions that increased the risk of a blowout to save the company time or expense."

Called by some insiders investigating the ongoing disaster a "perfect storm of catastrophe," the wellhead blew on the sea floor catapulting a stream of mud, oil and gas upwards at the speed of sound.

In describing the events—that transpired in a matter of seconds—they note that immediately following the rupture the borehole pipe's casing blew away exposing a straight line 8 miles deep for the pressurized gas to escape. The result was cavitation, an irregular pressure variance sometimes experience by deep diving vessels such as nuclear submarines. This cavitation created a supersonic bubble of explosive methane gas that resulted in a supersonic explosion killing 11 men and completely annihilating the drilling platform.

Death from the depths

With the emerging evidence of fissures, the quiet fear now is the methane bubble rupturing the seabed and exploding into the Gulf waters. If the bubble escapes, every ship, drilling rig and structure within the region of the bubble will instantaneously sink. All the workers, engineers, Coast Guard personnel and marine biologists measuring the oil plumes' advance will instantly perish.

As horrible as that is, what would follow is an event so potentially horrific that it equals in its fury the Indonesian tsunami that killed more than 600,000, or the destruction of Pompeii by Mt. Vesuvius.

The ultimate Gulf disaster, however, would make even those historical horrors pale by comparison. If the huge methane bubble breaches the seabed, it will erupt with an explosive fury similar to that experienced during the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens in the Pacific Northwest. A gas gusher will surge upwards through miles of ancient sedimentary rock—layer after layer—past the oil reservoir. It will explode upwards propelled by 50 tons psi, burst through the cracks and fissures of the compromised sea floor, and rupture miles of ocean bottom with one titanic explosion.

The burgeoning methane gas cloud will surface, killing everything it touches, and set off a supersonic tsunami with the wave traveling somewhere between 400 to 600 miles per hour.

While the entire Gulf coastline is vulnerable, the state most exposed to the fury of a supersonic wave towering 150 to 200 feet or more is Florida. The Sunshine State only averages about 100 feet above sea level with much of the coastline and lowlands and swamps near zero elevation. [Elevation map] A supersonic tsunami would literally sweep away everything from Miami to the panhandle in a matter of minutes. Loss of human life would be virtually instantaneous and measured in the millions. Of course the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and southern region of Georgia—a state with no Gulf coastline—would also experience tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of casualties.

Loss of property is virtually incalculable and the days of the US position as the world's superpower would be literally gone in a flash...of detonating methane.

Matthew 24 is the signs of the time and no it does not say anything about an oil spill.

As far as Methane Gas from the oil spill not killing people yet... I've not been arguing that it hasn't yet. I've been arguing that IT WILL NEVER KILL PEOPLE.

Methane Gas Explosion Blamed for West Virginia Coal Mining Accident
..0diggsdiggThe West Virginia coal mining accident yesterday killed at least 25, and hope is starting to fade for finding the four missing miners alive. It’s the deadliest mining accident in the United States in more than a quarter-century.

A methane explosion appears to be the cause. Normally when DISCOVER covers methane scares, it has to do with the potent greenhouse gas leaking from permafrost or the ocean. But for coal miners, methane represents a more clear and present danger: Underground mines can fill up with the flammable gas, and a stray spark can light it and cause an explosion. As a result, mines are required to have giant fans that blow methane out of the working area.

Methane not only appears to have caused the accident, it also held up the rescue effort. Operations had to be suspended because of a build-up of methane in the mine. It’s hoped that they can resume later today — but it will require drilling about 1,000 feet, through two coal seams, to get to where the men might have been able to find shelter [NPR].

Methane is ubiquitous in coal mines. The gas, like coal, is a molecule made of hydrogen and carbon, and it is produced from the same raw material as coal, ancient piles of biological material, by the same processes. Much of the natural gas sold in the United States is drawn from coal seams. In undisturbed coal deposits, the methane is kept loosely attached to the coal molecules by compression; when the area is opened up by miners, the pressure is reduced and the methane bubbles out [The New York Times].

Coal mining is an unavoidably dangerous occupation, but it seems Massey Energy, owner of the mine, was far behind where it should have been in safety compliance. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration cited the mine for 1,342 safety violations from 2005 through Monday for a total of $1.89 million in proposed fines, according to federal records. The company has contested 422 of those violations [Washington Post]. The citations at West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch mine included some for the improper ventilation of methane.

Just why Upper Big Branch suffered such a catastrophe at this particular time remains unknown. After the incident, geologists noticed that there had been two recent episodes of small seismic activities in the area—a 3.4 magnitude earthquake on Sunday and some surface blasting on Saturday that initially registered as a 2.9 quake. USGS geophysicist Julie Dutton says that the 3.4 quake could have been strong enough to dislodge methane pockets and contribute to the accident—but only if it were closer than its distance of 100 miles. “There’s the definite possibility that that’s what could have happened, but not from this earthquake,” Dutton said. “This one was too far away and days separated. That makes a big difference” [FoxNews.com].

By granny don't tell me that Methane Gas coming off this oil gusher is not a growing concern!

Methane gas bubble triggered Gulf oil rig blast that killed 11
By Simon Neville

The Gulf of Mexico oil rig disaster was caused by a bubble of methane gas that shot oil 240ft into the air while BP executives were on board celebrating the platform’s safety record.
The highly combustible gas burst through several seals and barriers before exploding, according to interviews with rig workers conducted during BP’s internal investigation.

Eleven workers were killed and more than three million gallons of crude oil have been discharged into the sea since the blast last month.

Workers on the Deepwater Horizon exploration rig, 50 miles off the Louisiana coast, told investigators that they set a cement seal at the bottom of the well, then attempted to put a second seal below the sea floor.

Containment device: A cofferdam is lowered this morning at the site of the sunken oil rig spewing thousands of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico

A chemical reaction caused by the setting cement created heat and a gas bubble which destroyed the seal.

Safety adviser Professor Robert Bea, of the University of California, said: ‘A small bubble becomes a really big bubble, so the expanding bubble becomes like a cannon shooting the gas into your face.’

Up on the rig, the first thing workers noticed was the sea water in the drill column suddenly shooting back at them, rocketing 240ft in the air, he said. Then gas surfaced and flooded into an adjoining room with exposed ignition sources.

‘That’s where the first explosion happened,’ said Professor Bea. ‘Then there was a series of explosions that subsequently ignited the oil that was coming from below.’

The BP executives at the party were injured but survived, according to one account.

HOW THE FUNNEL WILL - HOPEFULLY - WORK
The best hope lies in capping the well with a giant, funnel-like iron box known as a cofferdam, with a hole in the top to channel oil through a pipe to the surface, where it can be collected on a barge.
• Funnel weighs 98 tonnes - equivalent of 32 4x4 'Chelsea tractors' - is 40ft high, and is being built in a Louisiana shipyard by 25 welders working around the clock at a cost of £2million. Could be ready in two days and lowered into sea this weekend.
• Attached to mile-long steel wire heavier than it is, funnel lowered by ship's crane onto seabed and manouevred into position by robot submarines.
• When in place, the funnel should collect up to 85 per cent of the escaping oil --though it's never been used at such depths before.
Meanwhile attempts to stop an environmental catastrophe by using a 100-ton steel and concrete box have encountered problems.

BP chief operating officer Doug Suttles said a build-up of ice-like crystals inside the box made it
too buoyant and clogged it up.

Workers who had lowered it over the leak nearly a mile below the surface had to shift it to the side.

US officials have confirmed that oil has washed up on the Chandeleur Islands, an important breeding area, and tar balls were now seen on Dauphin Island, Alabama.

Remote-controlled submarines were used to lower the containment device, or cofferdam, over a large hole in a pipe which is responsible for 85 per cent of the leaking oil. The four-storey structure is designed to act like a funnel and siphon the oil up through 5,000ft of pipe and on to a tanker at the surface.
The quest took on added urgency as oil evaded booms to reach several barrier islands off the Louisiana coast on Friday, many of them fragile animal habitats. Several birds were spotted diving into the oily, pinkish-brown water, and dead jellyfish washed up on the uninhabited islands.
'It's all over the place. We hope to get it cleaned up before it moves up the west side of the river,' said Dustin Chauvin, a 20-year-old shrimp boat captain from Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana.
'That's our whole fishing ground. That's our livelihood.'
Oil has been leaking in three places since the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig which killed 11 workers on April 20.

One small leak was capped on Wednesday.

The third leak is from the blowout preventer at the well, a heavy piece of machinery that failed in the blast.

Crews have been trying to shut it off using robotic devices, but without success.
If the attempt to contain the main leak is successful, a second box being built may be used to stop the smaller, blowout leak.

The operation to fix the massive cofferdam in place is expected to take two days.
Engineers said it will take a further two days to connect it to a ship.
BP chief executive Tony Hayward admitted they had never deployed such a structure at a depth of 5,000ft and difficulties may occur.

He said that it was too early to judge the cost of stopping the leak, mopping up the oil and compensating claims for damages.

He said he thinks of the effort as a battle and added, 'We will ultimately win it because ultimately one of the interventions to stop the leak will stop the leak.'

An estimated 5,000 barrels of oil per day have been leaking from the wrecked wellhead on the sea bed.
Some 100 ships have been laying protective booms and pouring chemicals on the oil to disperse it.

It has been estimated that the clean-up operation and compensation bills could cost BP more than £10billion.
