Re: Whatever Happened to Sin?
let me see...my son went to a campmeeting and made the mistake of wearing a pink shirt one night and a yellow one the next....the preachers sermon was about pink and yellow shirts the last night...
Some people need to learn what sin is....Many years ago my daddy made the mistake of wearing beige shoes to a campmeeting....lol... the preacher preached that men that wore light colored shoes were gay...those that knew my daddy knew he had a woman at every port....lol...
What silly messages people preach in the name of Christ...no wonder some people think our Christ quite odd...

You might want to clarify (before he was married) about your dad.

Re: Whatever Happened to Sin?
Ahhh - brings back memories.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SIN? by Steve Taylor
A Christian counselor wrote, quote,
"It's the only human choice ahead
If you can't support it
Why don't you abort it instead?"
You say you pray to the sky
Why? when you're afraid to take a stand down here
'Cause while the holy talk reads like a bad ad-lib
Silence screams you were robbing the crib
Say it ain't none of my business, huh?
A woman's got a right to choose
Now a grave-digger
Next you pull the trigger
What then?
Whatever happened to sin?
I heard the Reverend say
"Gay is probably normal in the Good Lord's sight
What's to be debated?
Jesus never stated what's right"
I'm no theology nut, but
The Reverend may be a little confused
For if the Lord don't care
And he chooses to ignore-ah
Tell it to the people
Of Sodom and Gomorrah (woah)
Call it just an alternate lifestyle, huh?
Morality lies within
Consciences are restin'
Please repeat the question again
Whatever happened to sin?
When the closets are empty
And the clinics are full
When your eyes have been blinded
By society's wool
When the streets erupt
In your own backyard
You'll be on your knees
Praying for the national guard
If you don't care now
How the problems get solved
You can shake your head later
That you never got involved
'Cause the call came ringing
From the throne of gold
But you never got the message (got the message)
'Cause your mind's on hold
A politician next door
Swore he'd set the Washington Arena on fire
Thinks he'll gladiate them
But they're gonna make him a liar
Well he's a good ole boy
Who was born and raised
In the buckle o' the Bible Belt
But remember when you step
Into your voting booth
He'll never lie
He'll just embellish the truth
Promises were made to be broken, right?
You've gotta play the game to win
When you need supporting
Tell 'em that you're born again
Whatever happened to sin?

Re: Whatever Happened to Sin?
Sin should be preached against on a regular basis, human nature has a way of pushing the envelope.
One of the jobs of the ministry in the OT was to put a difference between the clean and unclean, holy and unholy. I believe that is carried over to the new.
But....
Preaching against sin should always be followed with a opportunity for mercy and grace. What use is preaching against sin if there is no instruction into righteousness?
Balance is the answer.

Re: Whatever Happened to Sin?
I find the most effective preaching is not that preaching that preaches AGAINST things. I just don't see where it brings a change in people to rail on things they shouldn't do for an hour. I prefer an approach that I see as dealing with sin. At very best it lines them up out of fear and/or intimidation.
I heard it said one time that the key to recognizing counterfeit money is not in studying the counterfeit. It's in knowing the original well.
Teach on the nature of God and how it applies to our lives.
Teach on the beauty and wisdom of God's Holy way.
Give examples of how following our own nature is failed wisdom and eventually leads us to destruction.
A people who follow God because they believe that His way is the wise and Holy way of an all knowing God are preferred, IMO, to a group who follow God because God's gonna get'em if they don't.
I've never been changed by a sermon that railed on for an hour about how evil this or that is.
Now... there are certainly times when people are rebelliously coming against clear teaching of God's word and the Bible spells out specif steps to deal with that and they should be followed. After all... it's all God's word.

(fill in the blanks with anything you consider sinful)
_________ (noun) is a sin.
If you participate in __________ (noun) you are disobeying God's word.
If you continue _____________ (verb) you will sever right relationship with God.
Those who ________ (verb) and refuse to repent will go to Hell.

Wisdom, unmasked. Thank you.
Preach God's righteousness to sinners, and how to live an 'over coming life' to the saints.
If not going to hell is our justification for following after Christ (humanism), then we might have well assured ourselves that that is exactly where we are headed.
