The Tarry Meeting
Anyone here ever been to an old fashioned tarry meeting?
I know the old saw about how we don't have to 'tarry' since the disciples tarried for a certain Day to arrive but after that the Spirit is available to everyone now by faith, no tarrying needed.
BUT, I can't help but wonder... is a genuine tarry meeting just sitting around waiting for God to do his thing? Or is it not more of a meeting where people pray, seeking God, allowing God to work in them to get them to a place of faith where they can genuinely believe and receive from God?
Not so much us waiting on God, but more a matter of God waiting on us to get to a place where he can work with us through our faith?
Many people hear about the baptism with the Holy Ghost, and come forward, but may be lacking in faith. Perhaps there are things they need to 'work through' before their hearts are prepared enough to receive God in all His fullness...
The idea expressed in the song 'I would not be denied' comes to mind... do we not sometimes have to persist in prayer and faith until the answer comes?
Would an old fashioned tarry meeting help to cut down on people being lured into confessing they 'got it' when in their heart they know they really didn't?
What ever happened to waiting on God? Not waiting 'for' God, but waiting ON God, in prayer?
How often have you prayed for something or someone, and finished confessing that God heard your prayers, yet inside you know you really didn't pray, you just went through the motions? Have you never went back, and got SERIOUS with God?
"Tarrying' in that sense might only take a few seconds... or it might take all night...
I am speaking of getting down to business with God and not 'letting go' until an Answer is received by faith, with the witness of the Spirit in our own...
