Drinking wine was very common then. Everyone drank wine. They cut it with water.
A Person had to drink a lot of it or drink it without cutting it.
I've known most of my life people who drink a glass of wine with dinner and never get drunk.
It's also very cultural based. Here in America we were influenced by the Puritans, but Orthodox Jews drink wine
