Now the question is when did this happen - during his time in the grave, or after his resurrection, or after his ascension?

My input: My Lord was in the grave for three days, and seen of men 40 days. That leaves seven days to pentecost. Going back to the old testament, that seven days was the amount of time that Aaron and sons were consecrated. After that, the gift of the Holy Ghost was given...spilling out over heaven's balcony and filling an upper room in Jerusalem.
