There is a misconception that under the Old Covenant, of which the Mosaic Law was part, that men of God were eligible to receive the tithe. The fact is, being a prophet, a preacher, or otherwise a man of God, had no bearing on whether you were to receive the Levitical tithe. There was only one thing that qualified you to receive a portion of the Levitical tithe.
You had to be a Levite. Just for an example, Elisha was a prophet, right? Yet he was not a Levite, therefore he could not share in the tithe. The tithe was tied to the temple system. It supported the Levites and priests (who were also Levites) to serve in the temple.
David was a prophet and a king, but it was illegal for him to eat the tithe of the Levites. This may help eliminate some confusion.

I'll agree with most you said. I still give from my first fruits but I can see what you're saying.
